The 4th year details will be agreed and the club can activate it with the player having no say. Usually each year will have an increase so say JCH contract was 200k, 225k, 250k, 275k, the club will have to pay the 275k if they exercise the option. I expect the club will probably let the option lapse and offer JCH a deal on reduced terms. This might work but he will have no obligation to sign and will be free to talk to other clubs. By all accounts he has a shocking attitude and is a poor trainer but the club hope that the experience JCH has had this season may persuade him to buckle down and have more respect for his profession.
