What is my being an EX English teacher got to do with anything? You can't read a post of mine without picking holes in it. However, I think enough on here have told you that there is nothing wrong with the long ball game if you play it effectively. Perhaps Ardley has the nous to get it right and use Dennis and Stead to better effect than anyone has so far this season.

I pick on your posts because you are a pedant who picks on other people's posts, usually about their English. I do stand up for you when people want you banned, but I guess you don't read those ones. Enough of the personal ****, it's not relevant.

It would be burying our heads in the sand to ignore the dangers here, that a new manager has been identified as playing a long ball game to a forward who cannot play that role. That is the precise fault that previous managers, particularly Nolan, have had. Stead is not a target man, nor is Dennis. Hemmings may fit that role when fit. But do we really want Murphy/Thompson style tactics where Battersby gets the long ball played to him? It took us to a play off final, but ultimately it took us down.

Hopefully Ardley can adapt again. I suspect Hurst might have been better able to do so, but that ship has sailed.

I beg to differ Bohinen. Not all managers who want to move the ball out of defence fast are hoofball merchants. If Ardley plays with two, wide attacking midfielders, it could be quite exciting. He will assess the squad and see where the strengths lie (cue pandemonium).
