How many players do we need to defend a set piece. They had 10 men, yet we still only had 1 near the half way line. We should have had 2 up front, that way it pulls another player out and also means Rodak might take a quick release. Instead off waiting for everyone to get into position.
Maybe even try what Millwall did to us and put 3 on the half way line, one in the middle, and one on each wing.
You're right IBS. There class on the pitch the second half was there for everyone to see. We couldn't use the extra man advantage work because they were just too good.
Although, we should have ad a penalty in the second half, McGinn although played well was given the freedom to back into players and then throw himself on the floor without it being a foul. He did it once so much that he backed away from the ball 2 yards, one of our players said thank you, took the ball only for the referee to give a free kick.
Grealish was a pleasure to watch in the second half, he deservse to be at a higher level but why oh why does he need to try and get players booked and sent off?
The referee in the first half was brilliant but in the second half he got conned quite a bit. Easier to see on the replays than being at the match I suppose.
Dean Smith was in the ear of the fourth official for most of the first half but hardly at all in the second! The cameras were filming him constantly whilst doing it and if it wasn't him it was John Terry. I don't want to think that this type of behavior would effect the way the officials preform but it did seem to last nght.
I've seen where people are saying that we were bad in the second half. We weren't as good as the first half but they were much better with 10 men than we were with 11.
We can hld our heads up and be proud that we're Millers. We've been looking for 3 teams worse than us this season and we can honestly say that there are! Unfortunately they have more points than us but it's not over yet!
Believe!
Oh and to add, I thought Vyner played well
Unlike some on here, and one in particular, I don't claim to be a tactical genius but the substitution that baffled me most was when Warne brought Wiles on for Towell.
Yes, the lad looks to have some promise but he's our least experienced player and his shortcomings were starkly illustrated last night. The Villa midfielders just brushed him out of the way, breezed past him or gratefully accepted the ball when he passed it to them.
I'm not blaming Ben for weakening our midfield to the extent that he did, just baffled as to why the management team should bring on an inexperienced ****ager against a quality side like Villa and expect him to have a positive impact.
Towell hasn't been anything special this season but he didn't do much wrong last night so I'm not sure why Warne took him off.
I would like to know why their players were allowed to play without proper studs in their boots cos they kept falling over :?
Also, the referee politely awarded fouls as he 'genuinely' believed that they had been impeded by our players even though our players made no movement towards them, rather they leaned and even fell (or threw) themselves into our innocent (niave??) players.
Seriously though:
I hope that our coaching team watch the game again but especially the latter section, as Villa's 10 men gave us a master class in game management.
Why does Grealish dive around trying to get everybody booked & sent off. If he concentrated on playing football he would be a far better player. McGinn was a bigger problem and nobody got to grips with him all night. He's only small but he leans over so much that it is impossible to tackle him.
Disappointing after a great first half. Smith still seemed isolated with them down to 10 men and us chasing the game. I know nowt about tactics but it seems to me when defending set pieces that we would benefit from leaving at least two upfield on the premise that the other side will always at least match it, so what's lost? And it might give us a chance to counter or at least not get penned in.
Grealish is both superb and a cheat.
Agree with most of this Froggie. The only thing I'd question is that whilst they were undoubtedly a much better side even with 10 men, I think that firstly we didn't box clever with the extra man to try pushing them back quickly enough but most importantly we didn't anticipate them storming into us straight after the break and seemed not mentally tuned in ready for this assault. We should have been just as pumped at the start of the 2nd as we were at the start of the first and that might have held out for longer and frustrated them into leaving gaps that we could exploit at the other end.
Felt like a huge thump in the coffin lid.
First half we were excellent in the face of all their players and deserved the lead.
Second half they were simply too good that’s what money gets you.
It’s easy to pick away at formations tactics etc.
I don’t think it would have mattered what we did tbh they were simply a class above us.
Not having a go at anyone for suggesting formations or tactics could have been different just can’t se how it would have made a difference.
Different worlds I’m afraid.
PS I thought the Villa fans were lacking in class just big time Charlie’s who are going to struggle if they go up.
Who would have thought a few years ago that we would be disappointed losing to Aston Villa? A crazy or brilliant 5 minutes, depending on who you support.
Losing to Villa won't cost us a place in this division, rather the poor performances against the teams around us. We're still battling, but only winning will help us now.
