Some great posts on here. I started going up the football refereeing ranks in the 80's in Lancashire but switched to Rugby League because of the abuse and violence you get in football. Another big factor for me was that the FA never seemed to back up their officials, always kowtowing to the bigger clubs. In RL the attiude of players and the games authorities was much different. I still used to do the occasional football match in the 90's and 2000's during my time as an RL ref as I used to get asked by teams who were desperate for referees. However, I would only say yes if they agreed to one extra rule. If any player other than the captain questioned my decisions I would be able to sin-bin them for 10 minutes. Not a single team ever objected to that. They all thought it a good idea and were happy to go along with it. I would do the same still but for injury.
