Technical problems with the barcode scanners which led to them opening the gates and letting through people waving a ticket so they simply don't know how many.
Those who gave an estimate guessed at between 18K and 20K. I had forecast less than 20K.
Possible reasons?
1. the ongoing off field issues the club has have turned some/a lot people off
2. the opening home games of a Rams season tend to be lower than our average due to:
a) those still playing local cricket
b) all those away on holiday
3. some will have simply lost the habit
4. some won't go until a sale of the club is completed
The gate is exactly what I expected. There will be those who will amuse themselves by mocking us. Let them.
It will be interesting to see how other gates stack up against the usual averages in the EFL.
