God Roundhay Park had some great concerts in the 1980s - Rolling Stones, Springs****, Madonna, Genesis, Michael Jackson, Simple Minds etc.

Came back from the Netherlands to the UK in 81, no work, and took a course that was held in offices just below the Headrow (almost opposite Leeds Town hall). Hot summers days, office windows wide open and remember hearing the various "eruptions" as Beefy took the Aussies apart at Headingley, never forget the smiles on folks faces in what we're otherwise dark times.

Yes I am very very lucky to have understanding strong family/friends for support.

Schizophrenia symptoms don't really appear until mid 20's and in England the treatment for it is poor at best with placements on long waiting lists,beds in old Hospital ward buildings and junior GP doctors handing out medication and when let out no support for independent living - living nightmare mate with high suicides rate.

No choice but to sell my flat,joined Mum,Dad & Grandma in France and now pay for private medical/mental care insurance costing €50 [£42] a month alongside the excellent free French healthcare available to me which I also contribute into via my now earned wages.

Hard to get used to paying for Health Care but Mum & Dad pay €46 [£40] a month each and get back 70% of any treatment,prescriptions they pay for including dental work and no waiting lists - so in comparisons it's worth it.

The English NHS Health Care system has a lot of rebuilding to do for sure after my experiences & the latest plans don't look good particularly for the retirees & my friends who are still in and out of hospital care who I remain in contact with.

What is the position in Australian Health Care ?

Thank you for sharing. You are blessed to be able to show some of your inner feelings.

I am blessed to not have mental illness and still sharp at 61. However, sharing inner feelings is not a skill set I possess. Not a function of repressive parents or expectations of being "macho" by my family. Just kind of how I'm wired. spent some time in some violent schools so it was never limited to a single horrible event such as your pic. Hardened the resolve to survive and stand my ground. I was also blessed to be born in a peacetime era. Military service is the greatest love you can show for your country but really hardens and alters a person. It's why I deeply believe that weakness never results in peace or stability.

I do think sports, and to a lesser degree blogs, represent an escape for many of us.

If you like reading non fiction books - give Tribe a go - tries to explain a bit about the attraction of military service and war and some of what may be missing in modern society.

What is the position in Australian Health Care ?

It is all free for pensioners unemployed and anyone sick for that matter eg depression, anxiety and in my case broken down body unable to work. That includes dentists although it can take longer to get in as it is done in the Hospitals.
Of course, everyone has the option of private insurance but why pay when you get it free as one Prime Minister said once.
Of course with Covid 19 things have changed and only the seriously ill or injured are taken in others are looked at and send home with drugs. When I had my heart attack in 2016 I was straight in and operated on within 1 hour. Then a month later my goal bladder decided to go on me was straight in but because of my week heart, they put a bag for 12 months before they could operate. When they took it out I apparently died twice and they brought me back and as I awoke all the Drs nurses were running around like crazy sweat pouring off them :(. Then my depression set in with the loss of both my parents and as a result, Dementia set in.
So I went from a fit strong man(they used to call me one punch Pete) because that was all it used to take me to end a fight lol to now a hack.
But the health system is pretty good here unless you are on your way out then they give up and stop looking after you.

Does anyone watch the tv series, Ted Lasso?
I just binge-watched it yesterday and today and freakin was laughing and crying. It's funny as but it tells a story that is inspiring.
Anyone who doesn't have apple tv and wants to watch it let me know I can link where to watch it all.

Most of the men I've shared psychology sessions with have the same mindset Spaldy.

Two well known physically fit intelligent footballers who I've spent times with in session and have talked to out of session in recovery units [who I am allowed to name] said exactly the same.

Both ex-Leeds players living in Yorkshire & doing lots of fantastic work when well,now helping people in need of mental health advice - Aaron Lennon & Clark Carlisle.

Both footballers knew how to look after physical health but didn’t really know who to turn to when starting to feel low and became very ill.

Both didn’t realise they needed help until it was too late and both would tell friends and family they were okay sadly when it was not.

Both now regularly go into schools & colleges & Academies to explain the importance of the need to ask for for help instead of hiding away feeling ashamed of what family and friends would think because people who need help can be difficult to spot and they tend to cover it up very well which I and many others did.

I can imagine the transition from lauded professional footballer to something close to "normal" life can't be straightforward, especially when fans can be absolute tools when they perceive your skills to be waning and you eventually become "surplus to requirements."

Obviously nowhere near the same level as the two you mention, but as my football playing days came to an end, I got irritated as my official squad number steadily got higher each season, despite my having no significant ties to the initial number I was issued (I went from 6 to 16 to 18).
