Not sure we can judge. The barrier to us understanding just who and what he was at Leeds was largely influenced by his insistence on retaining Portuguese as the language used in any "public" exposition. Not suggesting that wasn't a valid choice (whether I agree with it or not, given that he was "rumoured" to be well able to speak English), but with so few of us having encountered him on "common ground" and with a common language, its not easy to establish the balance between humble, and "separate". I would have liked to have seen him open up, in English, about how he feels/felt.
