Out of contact players, who to keep

You're simply suggesting the club should commit money they don't have. If there was high level of investment (hardly secure) then go for it.

Agents are used to get the best possible deal for their clients. They also work directly with different clubs. This is how it works. You're looking at it as a fan. It's business.

Howdy, not at all. By offering an extension to a players contract (early) is no different to attempting to get them to stay 2 years later (and probably at more cost) when it too late, it's just paperwork and all you're doing is looking to extend their employment.

You go up your pay goes up, you come down then so does your wage to reflect that. You always assume that players will sign on the dotted line Brin. For example, if you was DB and say on 5K a week now and they offered you a new 3Y contract that stipulated 10K/week if we were in the Championship or 3K/week if we were in League 1 and 1.5K/week if we were in League 2 would you sign or would you wait until the end of the season to see if another club (maybe one with more Championship pedigree and more money) came in for you?

You're wasting your time. Brin thinks after one good game we should offer players a 3 year extension. He doesn't appreciate who is in the driving seat. Hindsight is a wonderful thing which also applies to the deals that don't work out and leave you with an unwanted player on the books.

why would you even dream of offering Dexter Blackstock a new contract?

I've got to agree with Howdy/cam. It's easy to say "get them to extend" but players don't have a reason to extend unless the contract is way above there current one or they are getting on a bit.

Barlaser for example. Go back 12 month and offer him a contract. If at the time he was getting 4k in league 1. How much are you offering as a new deal? 5k,. 6k? 10k? If you offer 6k then 10k with promotion. What are you doing if he says no.?
Now what if he says yes? Are you offering the same to wiles, ogbene, Viktor. They all say yes. Brilliant we have 4 players on 10k per week for the next 3 years.... Now remove knowing they have turned out to be good championship players and all four are flops?

I know all the above is fictional but what if.

Any above average player won't resign purely because off our wage budget.

As soon as they start making waves we are buggered.

Just accept we have had them and they have helped us get promotion a couple times and hopefully keep us in the championship this season.

Only thing we've got going for us they'll play regularly for us! But when they look at their bank balance does it matter if they are playing?

Spot on Cayton. The 3 'main' players we are discussing are all on 3 year contracts and 1 year into those contracts we were relegated. It made absolutely no business sense at that time to offer them improved and/or extended contracts and that really was the case right up to Georgie boy sealing our fate 90 minutes into the last game of last season and even then nobody knew how well/badly this season was going to pan out. I'm sure there are offers TS (or any other potential buyer) could make that the players would snatch his hand off to agree to, but if he did we'd soon be moaning if/when we were on the road to ruin.
