VAR strikes again. Clear and obvious? Fuck off, man.
They're re-reffing games.
Var a total joke no wonder Pep was furious and martinez endless timewasting gets no punishment as usual
Best outcome for us, that result, I think.
Yes. Watching that game it?s amazing how deep Villas squad is compared to ours - Malen, Watkins, Disasi and Mcgin all came on.
Was it the sale of Douglas Luiz and Duran that put them ahead of us here or did they always have a deeper squad (due to the Ashley effect)?
It made me remember someone saying thats why Staveley left? She supported Eddie in his refusal to sell any purples to move the squad forward in the face of PSR? If it was then no criticism of Eddie here (just standing his corner) but Staveley should have understood the situation and overruled him.
All speculation, I know, but if true, then Villa really stole a march on us because we have bought very well in terms of quality but poorly in terms of quantity.
I can't speak to the Staveley/Howe situation. What I have heard is that Eales was brought in to run the club and he felt that Amanda and Mehrdad, whilst very well intended were a little too emotional and reactive which lead to several misses at key moments. Sheikh Yasir, displeased with the whole Ashworth situation sided with Eales. This lead to Mitchell coming in and the current structure being set up.
With regard to Villa's squad depth. Whilst it's true that the sale of Douglas Luis was of benefit, it is not the reason they have been able to invest in players to grow depth in their ranks. Like it or not NUFC are still recovering from the Ashley Era. The level of decline and neglect under the 15 yrs of that parasite damaged the club financially to levels we are still realising to this day, almost 4 yrs on.
Our revenue streams were on par with clubs at the top end of LEAGUE 1 with teams in the Championship having greater numbers of more lucrative sponsorship deals than us whilst playing in the Prem. The club's association with the former owner was that of a toxic brand that no reputable company would go anywhere near. That damage was intrenched. The years of revenue lost from SD dominating the advertising at pennies on the pound in comparison to a Spurs (a club who we wiped or feet on in the 90s commercially - See below images to see where we were in terms of revenue generation) and the other commercially well run clubs.
The Filth manage to sustain their incompetence and have managed to slow their inevitable demise due to their excellent commercialisation as a brand over the last 25 yrs. The Glazers, financially, have exponentially grown that revenue dining out on past glory. Without that financial clout they'd have dropped off a cliff far more severe than the one they have done.
Back to Villa. It's not all rose in the garden off the Aston expressway in South Brumijum bab! Look at their Wage bill. It's around the 95% of revenue mark. Prem rules allow for 80% for Non-Euro competing teams & 70% for teams competing in European competition. UEFA have the same 70% limit for Wage/revenue too.
They are haemorrhaging cash. Asencio & Rashford are both loan players and don't belong to the club. I should imagine but cost huge loan fees. With the current run in looking favourable to Villa getting in the top 5 (not at our expense) that gamble looks like an inspired bit of business. However, say the top 5 is LiVARpool, Ar$e, Forest, NUFC & City, that gamble doesn't look so smart.
Moreover, neither loanee will want to stay and play Europa League when, no doubt both will have offers from UCL teams. I could see Asencio at City or LiVARpool as Bernardo Siva & Diaz look to be on their way out the door from those two clubs.
In short. Villa's revenue streams were far more significant than ours. They had a sustainable well run commercial enterprise whilst we were a shell corporation for a sweatshop owning, dirty windowed, rusting stadium of a dead pigeon collective.
Return to the UCL next season should see more substantial sponsorship announcements and an up turn in revenue streams. However, as we've kept our powder dry for 3 windows now & will sell some more squad players like Longstaff etc (if possible due to the Homegrown 4/8 player quota requirements for European competition) coupled with the money/profit banked from Anderson & Minteh's we will be able to strengthen.
I would say we're looking at a window akin to the Tonali, Hall, Tino summer this season. However, we'll have to focus on the positions that need to be fixed.

Completely agree that we are still playing catch up, but as every season progresses our baseline revenue is growing, and the major debts we accrued under new owners in the first few seasons (73 then 70 will drop off the rolling 3 year PSR calculation)?
So as revenue goes up it allows us to spend more and stay within the limit, and this will be especially important if the rules change to be completely revenue based and not based on past 3 years net profit figure contributing towards the calculation? that will probably allow Man Utd to spend, but their heavy spending and wage bill (and Chelsea?s) will somewhat balance that out.
At the end of this season we see the 73.4m debt fall off the PSR calculation, and with revenue rising from 250m (22/23) to 320m (23/24) we should be in a very healthy position? in fact that alone should allow us to spend at least 73.4m as 25/26 first instalments (of 5 assuming 5 year contracts) if nothing else was to change.
Things have changed though, revenue will have gone up on one hand this season with Adidad and Sela replacing Castore and Fun88, coupled with the Stack revenue that should be a boost of about 60m
We don?t have CL income mind (around 30m as we didn?t have a co-efficient like Man Utd had) and wage increases (with Isak another likely to get a new deal) to take into account? but if revenues continue on the up we should have a very healthy amount to spendÂ… and we will desperately need to spend to compete domestically and in Europe.
Home-grown players? we could sell the likes of Longstaff and Target and still be ok? it?s based on 3 consecutive years with clubs associated to the association, not the club, between 15 and 21? that means Pope, Trips, Tino, Hall, Burn, Willock, Miley, Gordon, Barnes, Murphy all count.
I?d not be surprised to see a minimum of players bought from the Prem, if we could bring by in both Trafford and Delap that would be fantastic as both have relatively low fee?s, but for other positions think we are better off brining in value for money from Europe and blending them in over time, to increase the squad quality? we need depth next season.
The flip side of some many teams not used to CL qualification is that if they get dumped out soon, we might not get the extra CL spot? and that will make qualifying for the following year even harder with only 4 spots to go.
Out of the teams left, I think City and Villa have the easiest run in? Arsenal away is our toughest but the Chelsea home game is a must win I?d say.
The last 3 windows of not spending with the out goings and increased revenues as discussed mean we will be in a much stronger position. Year on year we're getting more and more revenues. In time we won't have any issues at all.
The Home grown rules are 4/8. 4 from the club 15-18 & an additional 4 from the natin 15-18, if I remember correctly from my glorious 150 yr reign as Newcastle United manager on Football Manager during my uni years haha.
Those rules might have changed.
I like the idea of having an English/British Core to the squad. I see Dibbling's ?100m (haha) has been reduced to a more realistic ?50m but that player should be ?35-40m. Ideal summer for me would be:
- Trafford - ?25m
- Huijsen - ?50m
- Dibbling - ?37.5m
- Delap - ?30m
- Total - ?142.5m
In 23/24 we spend around ?125-127.5m on Tonali, Tino, Barnes & Minteh. With the confirmation of UCL football we should be able to spend similar amounts and it's not beyond the realms of imagination that the club can afford to brig in the 4 mentioned about. Especially with a few outings to boot.
Villa have shown that the new format of the UCL is very favourable to the English teams due to the fat we do have squads of deeper quality due to the financial advantages of the upper-middle table teams revenues simply for finishing 6-10 in the Prem being far more lucrative that finishing hire in a lesser league such as La Liga, Seria A etc.
However, you do have a point about the additional spot.
Chelsea are aweful at SJP, I can't remember the last time they even took a single point. Not counting Chickens but I have total confidence we will beat them at home.
The loss to Villa is reminiscent of a similar beating we took at the back end of the season we finished 4th. That loss back then lit a fire under us and our run in was of similar difficulty. We picked up points and won games most of us were pretty nervous about.
We'll make the UCL I don't doubt that. What is important is the continuation of excellent recruitment, getting the right guys in the right positions is so important. We can't afford duds!
2 good posts above.
I don?t like blaming the, especially quite distant, past for current problems but Ashley s tenure still hangs around the leg of the club like an iron ball.
I get the feeling that PIF expected little success this season due to the PSR debacle (Anderson and Minteh) and not spending on the squad, so its been a tremendous season so far. The cup win needs no words from me but its so important that we get CL and you can see from manager reactions at the games recently that it is for Villa, City, Chelsea and Forest too.
