Milne was saying that he doesn't identify himself by his nationality, but by his locality, pretty much my view, depending on who's asking like. If it was an invader from another planet (which some on here seem to inhabit), I'd be a citizen of Earth. We all have dozens of identities other than national - parents, siblings, careers, professions, political alignment, fitba allegiance, salt n vinegar or nae salt n vinegar, Big Endian or Little Endian*, proddy or tim. There are about erm...1314 ways I'd choose to describe my identity before it came to national, either UK or Scottish. Patriotism, nationalism and national identity doesn't float my boat nowadays. Shouting about Jimmy Hill's poovery at Hampden was fun back in the 1970s. I no longer feel the need.
Someone else said that dividing lines on maps are just where the last pair of feuding vagabonds stopped fechting and went hame. There is much to commend about that outlook too.
