There’s loads of stuff that will come into it, but you’re right that it seems counter intuitive. Although it’s worth remembering that, for all of his qualities, Wootton isn’t blessed with pace and won’t run away from a defence. So maybe away we don’t counter as well because the rest of the team (and our quicker players) aren’t as close to him.

I still think it’s all in the mind, though. Even little things like the crowd getting up and creating momentum can affect it. At Wealdstone we had by far our best spell in the last half an hour shooting towards our fans, and the opposite at Bromley where we were heading towards the corner our fans were in during the first half and really should’ve been a couple of goals ahead before they scored.

It is weird. I don’t think we noticeably play much differently away. We still have long spells of possession, force teams back, put them under pressure. But for some reason at ML they always seem to crack and we can create/score at ease. Away they seem much more able to hold firm.

Most fans think you add another big centre-half and ask full backs to 'push up a bit', but in reality it means reducing your attacking pieces from 5 to 4 (a big deal in itself) and trusting your wide attacking play on both sides to non-attackers most likely.
Great system for fighting a relegation battle, maybe not so good when you're trying to be 1st or 2nd out of 23 so have to attack games

Of the ‘top eight’ that’s emerged, it’s only Halifax and Bromley that don’t almost exclusively play 3-5-2 or some variation of it. No idea why it’s suddenly so in vogue at this level!

Lack of 'captains' within the squad? Both times I've seen us promoted (97/98 & 09/10), the regular starting XI had leaders in abundance.

(Robinson, Strodder, Hendon, Ward, Robson, Ravenhill, Bishop, Schmeichel, Thompson and Lee)

There aren't many in the current regular XI who I'd put in that same mould.

That's a valid point. While I couldn't accuse any squad member of giving less than 100%, only Kyle Cameron shows the sort of body language you would associate with a leader. Nice teams usually win fair play awards, nasty teams often win promotion.

To be fair, some of that might be down to the fact that we now sign younger players rather than old has beens. But yeah we don’t seem like the most vocal team in the world.

Rawlinson and O’Brien as well to be fair, maybe DKE, but they’re all well out of favour.

It’s going to be a result of our transfer policy as well. We want young players we can develop and sell on, and generally that’s going to be a talented, tricky creative player like Roberts or Rodrigues or whoever, rather than a seasoned lower league organiser. But then we’ve had a lot more of those types - Turner, Doyle et al - in the last couple of years and that didn’t really work either. So who knows?

I would think that for the creative types to thrive, plus the team as a whole, you still need 2-3 of the more battling type players. To keep things organised, get stuck in when needed, dictate the tempo, keep the standards up on the pitch, and just guide the lads when something needs to change within a game.

It's a shame that the ones we have struggle to get in the team

Ultimately, your view of the situation hasn’t been proven to be correct or disproven. This will not be confirmed until our season is over.

Burchnalls football is no more effective than Ardleys, the table shows that to be true, both last season when Burchnall came in , started poor and finished 5th, and again our position this season at the lower end of the playoffs, despite Burchnall coming in before the end of last season, would help us this year, well it has not

You state that towards the end of Ardley,s tenure we relied on spectacular goals to win matches, well it has seemed very much like that to be, at Eastleigh, Wealstone, and Bromley, Burchnall was looking for perfect passing play, in order for Notts to score

I can assure you the picture will not change over the course of the next 10 or 20 games, because Notts just are not consistant enough away , or against bottom half teams, because he was a poor choice of manager , at a stange time, with no experience at this level

The only chance we have of promotion is to get lucky in the playoffs, most likely we will have a fourth season at this level
Notts have never at any time under Burchnall BEEN REAL TITLE CONTENDERS , my view has been correct from when he was appointed until now,
