The last set of accounts published by the club show that it was being shored up by signficant amounts of 'sponsorship' from ASD lighting. Even with that, in common with most Football League clubs, it was being run at a loss, with that being covered by 'soft' loans from, as I recall, Stewart or his companies (banks have learned not to lend to football clubs). No dividend had been paid out by the club.

So you can rule out the notion that he is running the club for his financial benefit.

What about kudos? The notion that he is running the club for the prestige? Well that doesn't really work either does it? Where would the kudos be in running a club that got trashed on an almost weekly basis last season? I can't see it.

If providing value for money means promotion then that means that only three clubs in League 1 will be doing so every season. That doesn't make much sense either.

So only players with a big price tag are worth bringing in? On that basis, bringing in, say, Ben Pringle and Kari Arnason (both on frees as I recall, but I haven't looked it up) was a bad move, but bringing in Jordan Bowery for a club record fee was progress?

Yes, we paid players the last time we were in League 1, which rather demonstrates that having a competitive budget doesn't mean bringing in players with big price tags attached given that we are, presumably paying players this season too.

Do you know pal,that is a great statement,i was only thinking the other day,how Arnason,Frecks,(when he came on loan) Morgan,Agard,Pringle (when he got a good run in the side),that you could tell these players were well above the level they were playing at,I fail to see one single player in our squad,that i think that about now.

Plus quite a few more.

In this "trawl" for good players we appear to be using coarse fishing rules, catch one, admire it for a short while then throw it back into the lake for somebody else to catch and carry off.

I think TS has tempered his enthusiasm for spending after the Stubbs debacle which may take a few years to recover from.
