Before the Mansfield game, we were 9 points ahead of them....if we had won we would be 12 points ahead of a team hotly tipped for promotion......12 points
We lost obviously, we are now only 6 points ahead of them.

The term "6 pointer" is generally reserved for situations where 4 or 5 teams are struggling to survive the drop......or trying to end up in the top 3......normally towards the end of the season
Take last year as an example.....it looked like Newport, Orient or Notts for the drop for a long period......so any match between these 3 teams meant WE HAD TO WIN, especially if we were on similar points......by not allowing them +3, but gaining the +3 ourselves...is mathematically worth 6 points ie we were 3 points ahead of them instead of 3 points behind them.
The counter-argument is to say "just win a few games and you'll stay up last year".....but we were on a horrible losing streak and we couldn't seem to buy a win, which made the 6-pointers even more important
Thanks for the answers, BFP and tarkers. I understand it now BUT it does mean every game you play is a six-pointer with the team you are playing against and all games among all other teams and their opponents are six-pointers too. Surely this is repeated with every game throughout the season, whether they are on equal points or not? I can see the term is usually used when two teams are close in league positions, though.
Just a shame gillingham didn't ask permission to speak to Evans last Friday ..
It could of helped matters regarding the result considerably.
.....but playing FGR is NOT a 6-pointer ie they are extremely unlikely to be challenging us for promotion......this is a "normal" game of "you are ****e and we need the 3 points, the same as every other half-decent team"
On the other hand, if we spiral into a 10 game losing streak....it might be a 6-pointer at the end of the day ie we end up 23rd and they finish 22nd.
Now I'm starting to confuse myself....time for another sherbet
As Tarkers say's, it's definitely just a sound bite. Mathematically it can't happen. In one game there is only 3 points to play for, not 6.
When the game has finished if one team has won they will have 3 points more than they did before, the losing team still has the same points they had before.
The only time you could say 6 points were relevant is if there is already a 3 point gap between the teams and the team with the higher points tally wins meaning the gap between the two teams increases to 6 points, but essentially that game still only awarded the winner 3 points, not 6!
This reminds me of the 'glass half empty' saying. There is no such thing as a half empty glass, it is either empty or it has some fluid in it.
There's 5 mins of my life I will never get back!!
How can you say Moniz was worse than Fullarton? Yes under him we were heading for mid table obscurity but at least the football wasn't boring with plenty of goals where as under Fullarton not only were we heading for oblivion but we were bored sh-less also, with the rubbish that was served up.
Well my auto-correct may not be helping me or my proof reading, but I can at least add up. Nine clubs have appointed Cooper as manager and eight have appointed Moniz, so obviously there are more that 'not many clubs' who would appoint them. Moniz would have had a decent season if it wasn't for the meddling of Trew and Branston.
