I'm sure Michael is delighted not to have been remembered as "a dribbler".

For me, we needed an upgrade on Mitch Rose in the summer and a younger version of Doyle in midfield. We got the latter with Reeves, and maybe Sloth was meant to be the new Rose, but we all know how that worked out. As a result, Doyle has been playing every minute and we don't have a combative midfielder who does the ugly side of the game a la Ryan Yates. Plus, we're still trying to find the best formation to get the best out of Ruben.
I'd prioritise signing a powerful box-to-box midfielder above all else this month, including a striker (especially if someone like Ricky Miller is the best we can manage).
While I would agree that Ben Turner is a reliable defender when it comes to heading and blocking, it's starting to really annoy me how often he just hoofs the ball into touch when he has time to control the ball and give it to a teammate. That suggests his confidence is still affected by the Halifax mistake and he's playing it safe every time - which I'd expect from Hayden Hollis, but not someone who's played in the top leagues. Let's hope Alex Lacey is now 100% fit and can resume the great partnership with Rawlinson that we saw last season.
One final note: I see that Chesterfield's new manager, James Rowe, has won three on the spin and that he bought one of his top strikers with him from Gloucester City for an "undisclosed sum." Things are going to be awfully tight in the playoff positions whenever and however this season ends, and we have got to put a Barrow-esque winning run together if we want to get into that top three and get some daylight between us and the pack.
Oh god. Your tv must have been bust during the playoff final, and you were obviously on holiday for the Barrow home game. If you think promotion winning seasons from the National league are built on old midfielders who can’t run then congratulations, your name is Neal Ardley.
Haha, seriously though if the club isn’t lying in saying Doyle’s their fittest player then what on earth does his age have do with anything? Don’t think he’s ever been a player with pace so age has made not much difference, he’s one of just a handful of players that have got to nearly 40 still playing decent, it should be applauded not ridiculed.
I agree, far too much emphasis is placed on age and all players are different. I ran my best ever half marathon time at 42! I think Doyle certainly has the required fitness to do what he does, and I've never seen him puffing and blowing in the later stages of a game. A young box to box midfielder would be great, but apart from Ryan Yates on loan we haven't had one since Neal Bishop.
You forgot to start the recipe,
Remove the manager from his duties as he is well past his sell by date.
Insert a new vibrant manager with a new approach to playing winning a football match..
