This Coming Season And The Challenges Facing The Club

The club tried throwing money about.
It was unsustainable - basically because the owner at the time had his heart in the right place but he didn’t have deep enough pockets.
It doesn’t take much to understand that the club is trying to build something through a different route - even though some supporters want to turn the clock back and spend spend spend and by doing so risk the whole future of the club again.

Brentford who are held up as an example of how things can be done differently - have managed to archive this - and so can Barnsley.

Yeah it's called risk and reward which is essentially the football industry in a nutshell .

You see I didn't mind putting my money in buckets when it all when tyts up and it went tyts up more due to the collapse of ITV Digital and those lovely bankers not helping us out and extending our overdraft .

I didn't mind because the ride was fecking worth it , we were the ones taking everybody's best players of em in the championship instead of the other way around .

The buzz at that time around the town and the club was better than any ecstasy tablet available on a Saturday night back then .

Those four years between 1996 and 2000 will never be repeated and John Dennis didn't speak about a dream we fecking lived one .

The reason we get the gates we do today is off the back of those days .

I'm just glad that we had those times back in the 90s. They'll live with me forever. I became a supporter in 1988/89 when I was 10. I've been very fortunate in my time as a Barnsley fan. Generation before me not so watching us struggle in the 4th division wi 2000 at Oakwell on a Saturday hoping that we could make the 3rd round of the fa cup being the highlight of the season. Nowt really happened in those days for almost 2 decades until the club hired Alan Clarke in the late 70s.

The club never looked back after that. We went up twice and built a solid championship side culminating in the Danny Wilson era. I doubt this club will see days like that for a long time.

I look back on the year in the Prem thinking how we were able to sign Jan Fjortoft from Sheff Utd(their best striker) and Ashley Ward from Derby (a proven Prem striker). The kind of transfer coups we would never have imagined prior to that.

If this is our best period right now then my favver's a black man. (no racism intended)

When I think of what John Dennis achieved at this club whilst chairman is truly remarkable. All this is with very, very limited funds- He somehow rebuilt the stadium, built the academy and training facilities, squeezed every penny to show enough ambition to get to a capable squad to challenge for promotion to the Premiership. It wasn't a one season wonder was it 96/97. The momentum had been building for a couple of seasons prior to that- 94/95 we finished 6th, 95/96 we finished 10th, 96/97 we finished 2nd. We kept captain marvel Redders throughout that period despite him banging in 15 a season from midfield (christ his feet wouldn't touch on his way out these days), saw the emergence of many youth players like Liddle, Eaden, Moses, Watson, Jones, Morgan all come to the fore. Bullock was electrifying, so too Marcelle. Shez was the most underrated player in the division. De Zeeuw a cracking buy. So was Appleby, Jovo and Thommo. Then the cherry on the cake was the Wilko Hendrie partnership.

Feck me, it's cheered me up drifting my mind back to that time. Thanks John Dennis. A true Barnsley supporter with the club well and truly in his heart.

The Big JD years put bums on seats.
As I’ve said before - there’s an equation waiting to be discovered that can determine what attendances you are likely to get in relation to the success you have had in the past.
That’s why Wednesday still get the crowds now - a consequence of their past glory years.

Unfortunately football has moved on from the JD years.
The players brought to the club in that era would cost in the region of 5, 10, 15 million each now.

It’s a huge pity there wasn’t big money behind the scenes when JD and Patrick was in charge - but there wasn’t.
But POTENTIALLY there is now.
No - not to throw millions about (but I’m sure they would if it more or less guaranteed promotion to the Premier) but at least money available to build steadily and carefully to create something substantial year on year.
That’s why I believe we have a more sustainable brighter future now than ever before.
All we need is for the 3 directors JAQ/James/Neerav to stay close and work together.

Chien Lee brought his own philosophy of how success could be achieved.
It didn’t work.
There has been a readjustment followed by a better understanding at the club now.

The Brentford owner Matthew Benham has invested £104.4m in Brentford in equity and loans. This sum includes £22.8 m for the new stadium project.

We attained from now PL Luton Town exactly the same fee we paid Derby County for Luke Thomas , around £1.2m .

Some real geniuses on Grove Street .

Luke of course was part of the greatest transfer window in our history of course in 2019 along with Radlinger , Diaby , Schmidt , Chaplin and Wilks .
