Tony Blair also stated that 50% of school leavers should go to university. Under the old 11+ system only approx 30% passed and went on to grammar school and from those, only a small number went on to university. There are far too many students without the academic abilities going to university, hence the number of ‘Mickey Mouse’ subjects on offer. It would be much better if many of these students entered into apprenticeships and the like. This is not devaluing apprenticeships but facing the fact that more are suited to this career path.

I stated loads of times before the election what a disgrace I thought the government had become.

In regards to the ongoing strikes IÂ’ll be honest and say that they didnÂ’t really affect me and until something is impacting your life you donÂ’t tend to take much notice of it.

No government should be caving in to wage demands butÂ…Â….in regards to Public Sector workers, their pay rises should be set in stone by an independent regulator and both sides should have to abide by the decision for good or for bad at times.

Its hard for me to answer that question because I don't know what I'll be getting back in return.

But if we had, similar to what we had in 2010, which were thousands more nurses, teachers, doctors and police officers. And an NHS that was efficient with low waiting times. I wouldn't mind an increase of an extra couple of pennies in the pound being taxed onto me.

No government is ever going to tell you what you’re going to get for your money.

The only thing you can be sure of is that they’ll waste huge sums due to idiotic schemes and bad procurement.

And there’s the rub. Many of us wouldn’t mind paying a bit extra income tax, but as mick states, so much of this money would go on idiotic schemes, minority groups and the like, and not to where it is so desperately required.

Thank you for this Leicester, this has been my exact argument for years, it’s good to hear these thoughts from an ex teacher like yourself.

University has become too much of a “badge of honour” for both students and pushy parents who like to puff their chest out and tell all their friends that their kids are at Uni ( a phrase I hate! )

University should be for the academically bright and the subjects to be credible.

My dad was one of the first six students to win a scholarship to the renowned Ashville College in Harrogate when he was 11, scholarships should be on offer in this day and age so that the less wealthy can afford to go to university.

I’m not anti university at all, my brother’s daughter was the first member of my family to go to university as she wanted to become a lawyer and she’s now got her first junior post in her chosen profession which is great.

The thing that really winds me up with graduates of any kind is the “I don’t know what I want to do yet” fraternity once they leave and the need for a “gap year” FFS.

I liked my nieces approach, she was laser focused from a young age on what she wanted and got a job as soon as she had her degree.

There should be much more of kids leaving school, going into companies and then those companies putting them through the necessary courses needed at the companies expense like used to be the case.

There’s been too much of the cost of training and learning passed onto the pupil rather than being absorbed by the company and industry they’re going into.

When I worked for Hepworth Menswear in the late 70’s to mid 80’s, they had their own specialist training centre in Claypit Lane, Leeds and we had to attend regularly, this is the way things should be done much more, in house.

When you set arbitrary targets such as 50% for university attendance for each leaving year you set yourself up for a fail, it shouldn’t matter if the figure is 15% or 75%, it should be based on ability, fairness in terms of finding the financially less well off and also based on quality and credibility of subject.

Agree with the incentives, but how will that be paid for? Some may say the cost of wasted PPE. Perhaps the cost of this PPE and sunaks helicopter rides.

I’ll come to answering your question in next reply, perhaps you can answer this: should we fund the Ukraine war or look after our own first? I say pay winter fuel allowances to the pensioners and end the homelessness in the UK. If you had a choice, Ukraine or us?

Farage and Galloway and the likes are the price we pay for so called “free speech” Regis I’m afraid.

I allowed myself to be fooled by Farage with Brexit, I’ll admit that.

If I’d known we were going to be so useless at controlling immigration post Brexit I’d never have voted for it.

Business wise, Brexit has ended up benefiting me personally so I can’t complain on that score, I’m probably in the minority though.

For me Regis - fund Ukraine even if taxes rise but respect someone saying the opposite. Putin won’t stop at Ukraine as he’s a psychopath plus I have a family member indirectly involved.

In terms of the lot of them - I have honestly never voted as they are all intent on lining their own pockets.

On Brexit - worst decision ever! Currently in Barcelona and it’s a beautiful city - friendly - incredibly clean and most things cost half the price of the U.K. Some said beware - more dodgy people in my home town from what I have seen. There is a pride in the city by the local people and the infrastructure is second to none with roads - taxi lanes - bike lanes etc. Our roads and infrastructure is s hite!

I'm struggling to see your point. We have public sector strikes which are crippling the country. The fact Labour have come in and resolved this quite quickly is a positive for me. I fail to see how trying to get the country back on its feet is spending money poorly.

As for Winter Fuel Payments, I couldn't agree more with this. Don't forget it is means tested for the poorest OAPs. I stand corrected on the pay elements. I thought PRB had recommended 3%. I do think this government has rolled over quite easily with doctors. 22% is the current offer for junior doctors and I think that’s excessive, without diminishing the importance of them.

I think you have a natural bias against conservatives and hold other parties to lower scrutiny as a result. You can have similar circumstances from two different parties and have two different views. An example is that you were against austerity when conservatives were dealing with significant spend from labour and now you’re ok with tax hikes when labour are dealing with the same situation.

If Conservatives had lied to the country around finances and their intentions, you would be all over it.

This has been a bad crop of conservatives. Boris and Truss have been appalling. Saying that I haven’t minded Teresa May and David Cameron; just my opinion. I think conservatives have continuously governed during the most difficult modern times and Labour have not.
