If anyone needs reminding of the realities of old Labour politics they need look no further than this thread:

Everybody should work less and someone else will pay. And when the businesses and individuals who the Left nominate to pay decide that the UK is simply too expensive a place to do business the Left can bleat about the unemployment that follows.

Did the 70s teach you nothing?

Back on topic it's too late to organise a Bank Holiday. What about orders for goods that have to be fulfilled, events that have been scheduled, operations that are due to take place, court cases that have been scheduled for months? The list is endless

It wouldn’t hurt to have a one off day after World Cup to celebrate and get it out of people’s system.

Ah, the good old 70's, when Mum's didn't have to work to pay the rent/mortgage, when parents had time for their kids, that horrid time when kids could play out with little fear.

Frankly harping back in time is a tory trait, and modern Britain is a long way from 70's Britain, much of that difference for the worse in my opinion. No one, absolutely no one is expecting Businesses to give something they cannot afford, but that wouldn't suit your blinkered narrative now would it.

Never mind, we'll leave the strong and stable stuff to the tories eh, absolutely raping this country with their policies which frankly are killing people, wanna chat about what a mess they've made of Brexit?? They're a joke, and anyone offering the tiniest support for them is frankly doing the country a disservice.

That tired old argument again.

My answer is the same: we still pay lots less in taxes than other countries (income and corporate) and as this thread shows, have less bank holidays. It's not about raising and cutting to make ourselves uncompetitive, it is about adjusting positively to boost public services whilst maintaining competitiveness with our main economic competitors.

Agree about the short notice bank holiday. Nice idea but struggle to see how it would work in practicality so soon after the event.

Maybe those workers couldn't because the playing field was sloped steeply against them because of the class they were born into..I'm disappointed though , I thought you had become a socialist...

The same tired old argument and the same tired old response.

Tax rates are one aspect of the cost of doing business in a country. Labour costs and transport costs are also on the list, both of which the UK are uncompetitive on.

You accept the wisdom of The Great Leader that increasing costs to business through increased corporate taxation has no bearing upon the attractiveness or otherwise of the UK as a place to do business, where even a smidgeon of reason says it must have.

Bank Holidays provides another example of the dangers of taking a single feature of an economy and making comparisons; it's meaningless unless you take into account the typical amount of other leave that employers offer.

So, we can't have extra bank hoidays because we have maternity leave, for example?? i'd suggest, like in many cases, that most of our competitors have a much more progressive attitude to worker's rights, and their benefits and holidays far outweigh ours, the public holiday is one example, you often talk of what it was like in the 70's in a negative way, yet you have an attitude to worker's rights which is bang smack in the middle of the 1900's...

So, goging back to your ascertian that raising corporation tax in the UK makes us unattractive, why is that so when our tax rate AFTER the rise is still much lower than our competitors??? businesses would be mad to leave, you make no sense Kerr.

Raising Corporation tax lowers tax revenues always has I posted a 50 years chart confirming such a while ago.

VAT needs lowering as that kicks everyone, but until we leave the EU we cant
