I’m English but not particularly an England fan after having years and years of having false hopes, sideways/backwards negative boring football. If Southgate and his pampered players can’t reach the final within this lucky fortuitous route that has been given (not earned) to them then they all want their backsides kicked and Southgate needs to go and take his boring demeanour with him.
I’m not that interested in international football. The US is even more hapless than give three lions.
However, I think different solutions for each country are in order.
England has plenty of talent grown in the pressure cooker known as the FA. Just a matter of picking it correctly. Get away the old veterans that have huge contracts and have lost fire that drives a young player. Pick a ruthless coach used to the lower leagues where they lose players and have to get the best out of every player they have. Another radical thought would be to pick players where the shirt means everything. They are out there. A little overt patriotism is not a bad thing for playing for England. You have plenty of talent to do this. The ego of the superstars prevent your winning
The US is a different problem. Plenty of pure athletic talent to pick from. The most in the world. However no domestic league and the players that go overseas to play in real leagues lose the fire to represent the country. The top level coaching is worse than many league 2 teams and selection process is worse than most countries.
Neither country has any chance without major overhaul
With you as regards international football.
Also agree that there ought to be enough home grown talent to create a really competitive England team, but........
The current squad playing at the Euros aren't "old veterans", the average age is just 26. Also, suggesting that the FA appoint a "ruthless" manager would be ok, however its highly unlikely that the FA would appoint anyone without significant managerial experience, as has been demonstrated over many decades. However none of this (likely or otherwise) will improve matters because the club environment where these players come from has been created by the owners/managers/coaches by combining what they consider to be the best players they can afford, irrespective of where they come from.
Guardiola has created probably the best club squad in the world, but take any of the component parts out of that 1st team and play them in a supposedly talented team but with whom they don't have any real playing experience and they simply won't do as well. Foden isn't as good playing for England as he is for Citeh, same goes for Saka at Arsenal, Kane isn't as effective without a Sane (or previously Son), etc etc.
Not sure international football has a long-term future, with both clubs and footballing authorities migrating to a mindset that prioritises club competitions
Hey I agree with the idea that we have had far too many false hopes and let downs, over the years, as England fans.
But that doesn't stop me, I look forward to doing it all over again, in every single tournament lol.
Come on Engerland, and George, the big fluffy lion. 🦁 ⚽ 🍺
Good luck with those dreams
The luck England are having I’d put a tenner on them winning it
Awful performance blessed with one moment of magic from Bellingham, 60 seconds before we were knocked out by a team over 30 places in the world rankings below us. So now all will be well and we return the the pedantic tedious sh1te that has featured so far (including this match)
Agree, all the previous crap will suddenly be forgotten cos we won
With the squad Safegate has had at his disposal , especially the 2018 WC and the 2020 Euro squads , we really should have at least 1 trophy in the cabinet , possibly 2.
A better manager with more tactical nous certainly would have.
