Ok fair enough. But Omicron has only been around in the UK for what, 3 weeks? Does that mean you think the plan for Alpha and Delta (ie vaccinations) was the right one, and you've changed your mind after seeing the early data on Omicron?

Interestingly the ONS report also says:

"Reinfection: those who have previously been infected with COVID-19 and become reinfected are more likely to test positive for an infection compatible with the Omicron variant, compared with those who test positive with their first infections."

So essentially the same is true for natural immunity as is true for vaccines, although it's not clear to what degree, according to this data.

Yes, the last bit is worrying.

Put it this way, we can't do this by the book because there is no book. It's a new virus with a new set of vaccines. We're scrambling around trying to find who's got the best predictive powers for some idea of what is likely going to happen next. Real experts will have their own independent thoughts and opinions on this and won't agree on everything, that goes for both sides of the fence on whether to mass vaccinate or not.

This situation isn't going well for anybody other than the people profiting from it at present.

There is a way out of this, but it involves most of the world being vaccinated. Until the West puts as much effort into getting vaccines to "third world" countries as it does its own citizens, we're always going to be prey to new variants.

Omicron could be a blessing as it appears to not be so devastating on the lungs as previous variants. Even so, I will very happily get my second booster in the next few weeks here in Israel - because I trust the science.

I'm currently reading the book "A Shot to Save the World: The Inside Story of the Life-Or-Death Race for a Covid-19 Vaccine," and in my eyes the vaccine is a remarkable success story. Of course, I won't be saying that in 10 years' time when the zombie hordes are chasing me around a still-undeveloped Broad Marsh.

And going back to the football, I hope a COVID passport is introduced for games. There's been one in Israel since the spring, and I wouldn't be choosing to go to the cinema, for example, without such a scheme in place. It's called "the greater good" - something libertarians don't seem to care for.

I get my fill of bad football leagues by following Notts vicariously, so watch as little Israeli football as possible. It's wall-to-wall Premier League for me here (all three EFL quarterfinals were on live last night, for instance, and I lucked out by choosing the Liverpool-Leicester game).

However, the teams I have a soft spot for are Hapoel Haifa and Hapoel Jerusalem. The latter (fan-owned and a mixed Jewish-Arab team) have a derby against Beitar Jerusalem this weekend - which is as if the Rebel Alliance decided to play the Empire at football.
