In short, I do believe that as a seperate country, we will be able to return these people back to the EU. The EU is failing in their responsibilities to protect and offer shelter to these people, which is against international law. Border officials throughout the world return people to where they've come from, if they don't have the correct paperwork.

Totally agree with Ram 59 on this one, the U.K. have been stitched up by EU law, over-liberal UK law makers, an absolute ARMY of legal experts who couldn’t give **** about migrants but have sniffed a dollar, and a country (France) that see porous U.K. borders as the part-solution to their own out of control migrant problem. Leaving EU will ease some of this but not all. Yes my attitude on migration has hardened, partly through direct life-changing impact both as a migrant myself and a victim of the negative side of migration

I was answering RA's observation on the recent French inaction regarding the trafficking of refugees, but by far the biggest influx of immigrants over the last 20 years, has been legitimate ones from the EU and wether or not we can accommodate them, we cannot refuse to take them, house them, feed them, educate them, medically treat them, etc. Now, we will be able to control who we allow in from the EU, the ones we need to contribute to our society.

But I think leaving the EU won’t solve it only overcome one obstacle.

The great thing about Brexit is that we can go back to inches and pounds and gallons, instead of these silly metric things I don't understand 😉

I work a lot with tradesmen and I’d say 90% still use imperial - it’s as daft as a conversation I heard my plumber and electrician have about it being frustrating he needed to by a 3m length of 15 mil copper pipe when he only needed two feet of it

None of which really addresses the irony of those who chanted in favour of ‘taking back control of our borders’ now bemoaning the relative indifference of the French now that we are leaving the ‘club’.

Can’t help but wonder what sort of similar impact there will ultimately be on cross border European wide law enforcement too.

As for metric v Imperial. During my final teaching practice in the mid seventies I was told that reference to anything other than metric would lead to automatic failure. 45 years on I still don’t recall ever seeing a distance/speed limit sign in anything other than miles or looking for trousers with anything other than a 34 inch waist.
Maybe it’s all the fault of those pesky Europeans again...or maybe metric is just infinitely more logical and we’ve only clung onto feet, inches and miles because it remains the numerical language of the USA.

Its not indifference rA, they appear to be actively looking to 'get shut' by deliberately not policing know crossing points. That being the case, France are more culpable than UK, who are at least doing the right thing legally by illegals

I said ‘relative indifference’, Andy. My point being that, so long as we were committed members of the EU the French were much more ‘supportive’ in relation to our channel border.

Now we’re determined to turn our backs and go it alone we’re being met with ‘relative indifference’. Who can be surprised?

I also really hate the dismissive term ‘illegals’. I know that, technically, that’s what they are, but can we not be collectively kinder?
I understand that cultural conflict exists and can present difficulties which none of us wish to be on the wrong end of...but to make such journeys in such conditions people have to be truly desperate.
A little joined up thought from the world’s leaders and what used to be called - perhaps inappropriately - ‘Christian charity’ would not go amiss.

Do you mean indifference, as in failing in their duty of care to these people, RA, as backed up by court cases against the French authorities?

I agree that we tend to tar all these people with the same brush. Personally I feel that, any family who has put themselves through such an ordeal to get here, should be given every assistance. But, there are too many young criminals, who are without morals, who see the UK as a soft touch. Those people aren't welcome here.
