Shocking. IMO 80% of the fail was lack of application from the senior batsmen
Whatever happened in March wasn’t as ‘shocking’ as today...but ‘lack of application from the senior batsmen’ seems to have been the case...again.
Most disappointing start to a cricket summer for a long time. Can’t bat, can’t catch, not much better at bowling and no discipline. Got tickets for Trent Bridge...can’t wait. :O
Tbf that was two B teams...Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, Woakes, Archer and a spinner (Leach?) would all have made a huge difference, but with Anderson and Broad both nearing the end, their attack just looks so much better. Captaincy and selection both poor.
Lack of application is clear and Burns shows this! Arguably the 'batter' with the least natural talent but streets ahead on application, grit and determination!
However, one wonders who coaches at junior, intermediate and senior level because they clearly don't put the basics at the top of the list! It appears that playing the line and grinding the bowlers down is not considered important so long as you can whack it over the boundary and get a quick forty or so. Consequently, building an innings with technique, patience and shot selection is a foreign language because they haven't learned how to do that!
Top international bowlers soon spot the weaknesses and expose that lack of technique, this means the batters have no 'fall back' to call on in order to sustain them in a genuine test innings.
Let's hope the footballers do better!
