Always, mac! Although my son’s treatment took place in the USA and I know for a fact that his first year of treatment cost $1m. Fortunately he was covered via his employment package and seeing as his treatment lasted for thirty months that’s something I’m eternally grateful for.
Whether such a figure can be justified or whether it’s drug companies playing ‘insurance’ games I honestly don’t know. I suspect the latter which is scandalous, but I remain grateful.

It just confirms how special our Health Service is and why it must remain so. This am I've once again witnessed it doing what we've, perhaps wrongly, come to almost expect it to do! For two days my wife has been in severe abdominal pain but has refused to seek medical advice (stubborn bugger that she is), however my daughter contacted 111 and, following a medical assessment, has now been admitted for a suspected acute appendicitis. So Sunak, "do not touch"!
Hope everything works out OK for your son and for your friend.

My only complaint when I spent sometime in hospital (derby Royal ) was the food, it was OK but portions were so small, thankfully the m and s onside had sandwiches etc otherwise I'd have half starved.

Plus one of my stats I was on the ward which was mostly occupied by alcoholics because I had liver issues (not alcohol related), that was an interesting experience, only ward you are locked in, they let me come and go but had to he let out and in by a staff member.

Clearly some very tormented souls, didn't make for a pleasant stay. Made you realise that it's a illness not a lifestyle choice

My genuine sympathies to all concerned. In my case, my wife of 34 years finally lost her life last year but she had long since lost her personality. Many others had jockeyed for lead position but it was all in vain. She was lost amid all the runners and riders. Thankfully she died last year but it didn't affect me as much as it would have as she had already died years ago.

Agree about the food Sith, I did the same re sticking to sarnies!! I suppose the problem with demand means that finding a bed can affect the ward they put your in. Hope you doing ok now.

yeah I am, won't go away and will likely be what I die of but if I look after myself which I try to that shouldn't be any time soon, no reason I won't live a normal lifespan.

Genuinely sorry to hear that, I agree though dementia/Alzheimer's is a cruel disease and it is often a relief for all when the person affected. passes.

My son’s case was approaching five years ago, mac...leukaemia...which would have been a killer just a few years ago. He’s been fine for the last three years and we were out on his Harley just a week ago so touch wood and all that. My friend I’m not so optimistic about but where there’s life...

Strangely, considering the quality of the medical facilities in the USA, there was the same old problem with the food and we ended up taking stuff in much of the time. Starbucks etc seemingly on every floor of the hospital but the in-house stuff was very poor.

Had to use the 111 service about ten years ago for my own wife and that whole service was brilliant. Shocked at some of the patients I saw in the Royal Derby though. Older ladies who could easily have gone home but who had no one to care for them so the hospital ended up doing the job of social services/care homes and what can only be described as ‘rogue males’ who really were a danger to others but who nurses and security staff alike were seriously restricted in how they could ‘handle’.

It’s a major problem but for all that we should treasure the NHS and I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about Sunak and Co. Hope you have a more than ‘normal’ life span Sith...sounds like, as you say, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t.

We are lucky to have the NHS in the UK. Here in NL the health service is insurance financed. Fortunately we get a discount through my wife's employer. There's a statutory €385 a year own risk. I'm on 8 meds a day. Each year, mid January, my meds for the quarter arrive. This year the cost was €370. I pay the €385 over 10 months at €38.50. The rest is free. Good service too.

Insurance is obligatory.

I genuinely feel for all on here who have had friends and relatives going through serious ailments. You never know who's going to get what and when?
