As indeed does every manager, even the best with the most resources and a whole army of scouts, recruitment analysts and the like. The difference being of course is that some clubs can afford to spend ?40 million or more on a failure, Derby can't.

Given that Warne and the recruitment teams failures were either loans or cheap transfers it hasn't impacted the club. Indeed the squad assembled achieved the target of automatic promotion so can hardly be judged a failure and football is now a squad game, I haven't looked in detail but Waghorn's 7 goals must have earned some crucial pts which helped towards that promotion.

What the last 3 signings show is that perhaps the recruitment team that has been put together at Derby is now achieving that holy grail of getting quality players (at this level) without spending silly money.

If Derby can replicate Brighton's model, buy (relatively) cheap players that can develop and be sold on at a significant profit, then provided we have a head Coach and his team who can the best out of them, the future could be bright.

Semantics, GP. So technically Warne didn’t make the signings, however they were made under his tenure and, as MA has explained, he would have had the final say.

I fully appreciate how much things have changed as regards the manager/head coach role however if you believe that Warne, like Rosenior (also head coach) before him, had little to do with acquiring the signings they did then we’ll have to differ.

As regards John Eustace. One of the prime reasons for him leaving his head coach position at Blackburn was given as lack of support in the transfer market. Seeing as they made six signings in January that would appear to translate as - he wasn’t allowed to sign exactly who he wanted - so we will have to see what happens and hope for the best, but I’m sure this is something that both owner and new head coach will have already held detailed discussions over.

I think as far as most fans are concerned, players signed under Rosenior’s tenure are ‘Rosenior signings’, players signed since then have been ‘Warne’s signings’ and those we sign in the summer (and hopefully beyond) will be Eustace signings. Beyond that there’s still Forsyth who I still regard as a Clough signing even though he was wisely re-signed by PW.

Sold 2 players in the summer window for a total of ?30M. Got a fair few back for an outlay of ?3.5M. Lack of guarantees from BRFC that they'd be any more generous in the future and a refusal to extend his contract. He will have negotiated some kind of "warchest" with Mr Clowes and we shouldn't have that as an issue.

It will be interesting to see if the current methodology remains in place or gets altered.

Will be interesting to see how much of the Cashin cashin is left after paying off Warne and his support, paying off Blackburn for Eustace and his support, investing in what I guess will be a higher managerial salary comitment and buying a 4m (supposedly) Norwegian CD - who looks good so far. Not much I'd suggest and given that DCFC is likely still running at recurring levels of losses, I wonder how much more DC has committed to DCFC.

We dont have any obvious jewels coming through the system for a while - at least not at a saleable for decent money level - so JE likely isnt going to get much more from us to spend than he would have done at Blackburn, unless an investor puts money in. To have pulled off this appointment does tend to suggest that the wealthy investor may be closer than we think. Who owns Slim Chickens?

Talk of an imminent investor is something I mentioned a few days ago, GP and I agree it seems ever more likely.
Either way JE and Co. appear to have been given contracts that run until 2028 so fingers crossed he’s a success.

What was in the departees' contracts? Have they been given almost 18 months wages as a lump sum or are they being paid, monthly, until either they find another job or their contracts reach their expiry date in the summer of 2026?

If there's truth in the coach/physio/medics bust up rumours, might they have been sent packing with nowt?

A poster, who says he recently spoke to an academy player's agent, was told "Warne had dismissed the future prospects of all of the academy players with the exception of his client", also adding that he believes the same was said to other agents too - essentially saying none will play in the first team under him. It wouldn't take long for that sort of information to find it's way into the board room, and if you were spending ?5m a year on something, you'd hope to see some ROI.

I rather think the issue at Blackburn was a little more complicated than purely lack of support in the transfer market, there is a history of coaches falling out with the current owners, who seem to have no clear plan for the club other than to milk it for money.

Of the 6 signings, 3 were loans 2 free transfers and only 1 on a contract that extends beyond the end of this season. Which translates as cheap short term players for a club that pulled in a great deal of money from selling players in the last couple of years. Rather than translate as "he wasn't allowed" to sign exactly who he wanted, surely that indicates he wasn't allowed to sign players of the quality he wanted and thought necessary to continue to improve the clubs position in the league and there was no realistic prospect of that changing.

Warne of course was not able to sign exactly the players he wanted or indeed of the quality he wanted, due to the financial restrictions Derby were operating under until last summer. So judging his signings without taking into account the circumstances he was operating under is perhaps unfair.

But Clowes has as far as one can tell reinvested the proceeds of Cashin's sale and does actually have a plan and a set of financial parameters within which he operates.

If that's how the manager assesses the youth setup, then the youth setup is failing, not the manager. It's not for the manager to choose a youth player just to satisfy the money spent on their development. The board room should look at the youth setup and why, despite ?5m per year, it's not performing.

Maybe the point is that it was working and we have a good record of bringing youngsters through. At the moment we seem to be down to just Brown and Robinson. I know we had to sell a lot and only Mel Morris can be blamed for that situation, but personally I am surprised that Robinson hasn’t been given more of a chance.
