We look like we can score different types of goals, not just the tiki taka / unpick the defence kind. We score on the break, we put good crosses in, we shoot from distance, we swing corners in. We are a more rounded team that with Williams. I’ve always looked upon it as building blocks.
Ardley laid the foundation for Burchnall, who in turn gave Williams the platform. Now we’re seeing the “body of work” over a few seasons produce a more rounded team.
I’ll always be a fan who is rooted in a ‘more traditional style of play’ just because that’s what I’ve watched at the lane for 50 odd years now, but it doesn’t mean I can’t see a recipe for success now.
Whatever happens, fans will react emotionally when we’re in a loss of form and unfortunately Maynard will get the rough end of this more than most managers. Can’t change that overnight, but the fact he’s a year in and the team looks better set for a promotion push now has got to start getting him credit in the bank.
Considering the opposition and the players we had, scoring goals would not have been a problem, regardless of who was the manager.. I still say regardless of what others think. He was, and still is a one trick pony..Quote:
