Have to say I’m enjoying the more no nonsense approach from our defenders this season. They still play it out from the back but if it’s not on it gets booted so credit to them and also to SM to encourage it.

Even from a far and from highlights it was clear we were too insistent on playing out from the back. As you say Matt now that’s still the preferred method as it retains possession and we can construct attacks but we now have an option B of going long. Having Jatta in the side certainly helps with that second option.
LW was one dimensional and teams that had more savvy sussed us out quite easily. He (LW) appeared unwilling or unable to tweak the style of play to counter those savvy teams (I always think of Wrexham sitting back and drawing our defenders up to the halfway line then lobbing a ball over the top for their cavalry charge). The defensive dilema that he spoke about more and more towards the end (and he said he couldn't get them to concentrate) was the expectation of players being asked to play something that they struggled with. If LW have the vision to mix it up instead of just persisting with a high possession press then who knows what might have prevailed last season? I think SM has the balance between a quicker, more expansive high press and the occassional need for row Z just about right. He has settled in well this season and it's just a pity that he can't fire on all cylinders at the moment.
On the topic - Dan Crowley is a top player who could play at much higher level. He is a ***** cog in how we play and the longer he is at the club the better.
