I was there it's like dear Deidre with Warney! for women. I take back what I said about Evans after yesterday can't give him another transfer window. Artell look no further one of our former players doing a great job at Grimsby.

Warne and Vaulks still remain very close personal mates.

I don't care what dugout he stood in or whether he only signed players that drank green tea and volunteered at the homeless shelter on their days off. Warne was great for Rotherham United and gave us some fantastic memories. Whilst he no doubt had his critics and he wasn't perfect (if he was he'd have been snapped up much sooner), when he was in charge the feeling around NYS was much more positive. There was a real connect between the club and the fans, we were respected and admired by other clubs for what we achieved with a small budget and the wider media warming to his affable personality was a good advert for the club.
I don't know what, if anything, happened behind the scenes with Tony Stewart. There's a few whispers on here from people "in the know" who are keen to remind us of that and nothing further. I don't do social media so no idea what is peddled on there as truth. But I'm pretty sure that Tony is looking back and wishing he did whatever he could to keep Warne here because the club has been on a shocking downward spiral since he left.
People will no doubt remind us of his failed attempts to keep us in the Championship but it's a very difficult league for a smaller club with a learning manager to compete in. Many bigger clubs than us struggled in that league and many of those same clubs found it much harder to get back out of League One than we did under Warne.
I always felt Warne was getting closer to cracking Championship survival. In the 20/21 season we were minutes from safety until a late Cardiff equaliser sealed our relegation fate. But the culture, work ethic and strong team mentality were a solid foundation to build on, we just needed a few more decent signings in the squad. Now whether that was as a result of the Chairman not providing the funds or Warne frustratingly sticking to his "small squad" preference I honestly don't know. Maybe it was a bit of both. But in my opinion that was the key to Warne failing. We played high tempo, pressing football, which is difficult to sustain over a season and even more so with a small squad. Injury and fatigue set in. Even in our successful years under Warne we faded badly in the second half of the season, with players playing through injury and fatigue, and not being able to fill the subs bench. A few more players in the squad could have made a lot of difference.
When Taylor came in, he completely shattered that tight knit team mentality and the foundations that Warne built. Obviously this wasn't a malicious act, I think Taylor felt that "the Warne way" would mean that our Champions League Final was finishing fourth bottom in the second tier. He wanted to change that mentality from top to bottom and make us into a club that played with confidence who were not always seen as "punching above their weight." It was a great idea from a manager who had great qualifications on paper. But seemingly no clue how to build a team or a battling ethos and his tenure proved to be an expensive mistake. It wouldn't be so bad had we not seen the exact same thing happen only a few seasons earlier when Alan Stubbs arrived with grand ideas to turn us into a Champagne football team with Lambrini signings.
Now we are where we are. Spent the budget in summer bringing in a number of signings that we were all happy about at the time. Everyone thought we would be up there in the top six and promotion or not, this would be a feelgood season. It hasn't worked, it's been dire and Tony Stewart seems to have fallen out of love with the game again, just like he did when watching the club stagnate under Taylor. Sadly, a lot of fans seem to have taken the same view and apathy is everywhere.
Oh for those halcyon green tea days ;D
Excellent post Derek.
Blimey, you must be at least five foot one with all that aggression.
No. It was a poor comment (which I thought someone else had had removed and for which I thanked them). Stupid, but not easy to remove from this platform.
Just a couple of people on here press all my buttons. It's time at my age that I grew up and scrolled on by, as Dionne Warwick said. I'm sorry - and working on it.
Me too Steve, I?m getting even dafter as I get older ha ha
