Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
This old chestnut has come around again! Boils my blood all this justice rubbish.
It was a day when a tragedy happened yes but is it justice they are after or a scape goat to blame it on.
In my book it's pretty simple. Cause and effect!
What caused it: hundreds if Liverpool fans trying to get in without ticket.
What was effect: 96 lives were tragically lost.
Do if they want justice ten every single known fan who went go Sheffield that day without a ticket and tried to enter the leppings lane end should be charged with involuntary man slaughter.
Mistakes were made by the authorities and ground staff but they are human and tried to do their best. They were not somewhere they were not meant to be or doing something they shouldn't that resulted in the deaths.
So if it's justice try really want let's see those that caused it charged!
re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
Totally agree Ratty.
Liverpool fans have blamed everyone but their own for what happened that day.
No disrespect for the innocent 96 who died but the ones who tried to get in without tickets, the ones who left the pubs late and caused the panic have never been blamed.
They claim to want justice but wait til someone ,other than Liverpool people, get the blame and then they'll be wanting compensation.
I hate to be so cynical but they will milk this until there's nothing left.
re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
An emotive subject.
On the one hand, you're right Rats. The root cause of the problem was too many fans without tickets. However, the reason this has dragged on was not the mistakes made by the authorities that day, it was the way they tried to cover it up.
That was absolutely shocking.
The fact also that proper medical card at the time might have saved the lives of some certainly doesn't take any blame away from those in charge and if I had lost a child or other family member at a football match and was then lied to in a way that compounded the grief then I'm damned sure I would pursue it until I was satisfied.
If those in charge on the day who made the mistakes they did, and those above them, had come out and been open about decisions they made and why they made them and apologised instead of deliberately manipulating and falsifying information then this would have been over years ago. Then sufficient focus could have been given to those fans who unwittingly contributed.
Another

I live in Liverpool and while that does not qualify me any more than anyone else to talk on the matter it does mean that I invariably hear conversation and the mindset of Liverpool people. It's a very sensitive subject even now.
I think the reason they want justice is not for the tragedy itself but for the subsequent cover up and tarnishing (or scapegoating, actually) of the scouse as a community. They get a very bad rep over here as a community which may or may not have given reason for people to believe the police's version of events and the sun's disgusting headline. I, and they, are not saying they were faultless. But the police's handling of the yragedy both on the day and in the aftermath, including writing false witness statements and a complete denial of any wrongdoing was simply insulting and corrupt.
THAT is what the scouse want justice for. The 96 were used as a scapegoat for the tarnishing of the reputation of a city and area which has lasted the best part of 25 years.

Another thick , ignorant post - this just flies in the face of all the information that is now

re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
Time to move on over this , 25yrs !!! , you dont hear people from Bradford or Lincoln bleeting going on over the what happened with their tragedy and wanting a nation to remember the deaths from what happened , the fact is if people didnt travel without a ticket , its unlikely this would have happened , what about Heysel ??you dont hear them go on about that do you !!
re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
This is just another ignorant stupid post from Rattea to stir up feelings and debate.
Let's ignore him and move on.
re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
I am with Rat on this one. No disrespect to those who lost their lives, their loved ones or their kinfolk, but for God's sake let's move on.
I get the feeling that until the Liverpool fans: who no matter what they claim, doubtless contributed to the problem (one might even say were central to it, being drunk and ticketless) are completely and inappropriately absolved from all liability, there will be no end to the appeals and pleas and ultimately claims for compensation.
This is not a tirade against the land of scouse, but I'm not so sure that, if it were Geordies or Manks involved, the same whining would continue. Liverpool seems to have a "never our fault" culture and this exemplifies that perfectly. Sure they was blame and negligence on both sides including the police cover up, but I would love to hear an explanation for his actions from one of the ticketless fans who chose to try to get into the stadium.
BUT the scousers seem to accept no blame at all. Just like no doubt the
re: Is it justice or scapegoat for the 96?
Yep, I'm with Ratty as well, the supporters of LFC have to bear some blame here and as Roger says they do seem to have an always the victim stance.
However what happened on the day and the inept actions by South Yorkshire Police are even more disturbing. The whole cover up / blame culture that followed this event should never be forgotten.. There is an arguement that their actions indeed cost lives and they should be answerable for their actions and that I believe is where the 'justice' element should be.
Also some of the national press coverage at the time was truly shocking and they seem to think that a small apology 20 odd years later is enough.. They too like the law seem to think they are above the law.
To be fair to the people of Liverpool, they have stuck to their guns on never buying the Sun.. I guess they don't print too many copies up there.
