Aberdeen property

A couple of lads I know are working just outside Aberdeen, a couple of years work building 'executive' homes. I thought it was a bit strange as last month the papers said North Sea oil revenue was down 40%, I didn't know Aberdeen was into renewable energy. Siemens are building wind turbines at Dundee docks and a mate of mine has moved to Spain where they're building wind turbines, might give him a call, looks like wind turbines are the future. I'm not a big fan of them tbh.

This has been a bit of a talking point down the boozer the past few months. Some people we know own property and rent it out, a number of the tenants we believe are unemployed, so the landlords are getting hundreds of pounds off the state every week, but as they live abroad most of the year they can (we believe) claim most of their tax back. Therefore if councils built more homes the housing benefit money would stay in the UK and not pay tax free high living for some. Maybe Moorlad can confirm the tax free bit.

Depends on individual circumstances, some may still be taxed in the UK, some may be taxed overseas (if it is being declared anywhere). It's really nothing to dee with claiming tax back, it's whether they put it on their return (if domiciled in the UK), or on their foreign returns depending on their status.

Council owned housing has been declining for decades hasert it? Loads of the properties are company owned, or by housing associations. The days of mass council property ownership are long gone. Firstly how would they afford to build new properties? It would be down to council tax payers I'd suggest. Secondly councils don't employ nearly as many tradesmen as they used to so they'd need to use sub contractors, thus making it more expensive. Thirdly they'd of to think off of getting an return on their investment in these days, how could they do that if all their tenants were gan to be on the dole (council houses round here used to get wrecked regularly by drunken dole spongers -

I know but the problem with socialism is that those in power always and without exception adopt a "do I say not as I do" attitude and we end up in the same position. It's good in theory but in practice it don't work.
