SCOTTISH CUP QOS v St.Johnstone

Anyone else recall 24 Jan 1976 ?

Home to St. Johnstone in 3rd Round on a crisp, cold sunny day.

They were sruggling big-time at the foot of the Premier League and we were hitting form after a disastrous start to our First Division campaign. The signing of Peter Dickson in November 1975 provided the catalyst for what was a decent squad to start performing to their potential.

We took a 2 goal lead within about 15/20 mins - both scored by Jocky Dempster - and looked comfortable.

I can't quite remember if we went 3 up or if they pegged us back 2nd half to 2-2 but it turned out to be a close, nervy finish.

We played in all white that day and I imagine the team would have been Ball, Miller, McChesney, McLaren, Clark and Boyd; Dempster, Dickson P., Reid, O'Hara and Dickson G. Subs possibly Donald and Thorburn.

The crowd was between 3,000 and 3,500.

I was there, I remember it well. Or at least I can remember the nervy finish...
At the time, it wasn't felt to be that big a 'shock', given Saints were struggling.

You have a very good memory NV. We were three nil up ( Reid) with only 20 mins to go and then conceded two . Final score 3-2 , crowd 3,700.

Regarding this game , Saints are a far better team than they were earlier in the season and I noticed ( from watching weekly Sportscene highlights) that their two centre half's attack the ball very well from corners and free kicks . Hope our best headers of the ball are allocated these men to pick up . A very tough game for us but also a very tough game for them. Should be a cracker , see you there NV.

I can only remember one other SC game against Saints and that was in Dec 1985 at old Muirton Park . We were awful and got beat one nil but of course got promoted at the end of the season ( 85-86).

That game was one of my earliest memories of queens. If my memory serves me right dempsters second goal was a screamer when he cut in from the right wing, shooting into Portland road, and smacked a 20 harder low into the bottom right corner, beating the keeper all ends up. I remember standing behind the goals and seeing it. Have to say dempster was a class player back then.

Palmerston Pitch is still covered in snow which is a concern :(
