I heard that Dave Mackay has died.
Now, he was one tough bugger. I saw him play at Newcastle in what I think was his last season with Spurs. It was obvious that some of the Newcastle players were scared to go near him.
We have been talking about on-field leadership recently. He was exactly the type of man to generate 100% effort from those around him.
Was going to respond in saying that era is long gone and sadly missed by me at least.
But you guys already know of my view on the 'modern professional' - generally.

I just read on the BBC that George Best said Mackay was the hardest player he ever confronted, which is saying something when you consider the pounding Best took.
Most of you youngsters won't have seen the picture of Best that appeared in a Sunday newspaper many years ago. It was a shot of him naked, from behind, and he was black and blue with bruises.
One of the things that made him great was that he just shrugged off the battering that he took on a weekly basis.
Oh how CR7, must be thankful he was not plying his trade in the 70's :(
Then again, how Pele must be sneakily envious of the protection of todays 'stars'.
How one nations entire footballing philosophy was transformed from one of grace, to a squad 'giving it back' in retaliation.

Yep, we need something a bit more 'in between' though where divers, charlatan's and cheats are dealt with in equal measure of the lets say 'more aggressive' opponent.
