ok heres my point - were basically running the club to pay for the Heath

and of course falling short money wise
due to playing so much (So many staff in cat)

also

when people say how good our players are they forget the OTHER players we used to pick up from non league - ARE WE NOT FINDING THEM NOW - except for the Johnson boy from Kidsgrove who didnt progress and the alsager lad we just got

heres some from non league we had

tony naylor - colin little - steve mccalley - sean smith - wayne collins - luke varney - steve jones - eddie the eagle - dave waller

loads more

and players from big clubs that were thought to be finished or picked from other clubs

neil lennon - ashley ward - geoff thomas - platty

lets look harder at these places - ireland - league of wales - national league 2 -

jnow weve missed out on a few as we wouldnt pay for them - vardy - cooke etc

should have in my mind 60% home grown + rest pick ups and maybe 2 loan

True plenty of players around we dont need an Academy,all we require is a decent Scout.Baker was at one time doing that job but he turned out a disaster,finding just Vardy in the past 15 years.By the way Toquay have just CLOSED there Academy down to Expensive to run they want to invest in the 1st team?

I love reading these "anti Academy" posts. Without the Academy over the last 30 years or so, we would not have a club to moan about. The constant carping about the money, the staff, the players (or lack of) becomes quite tiresome. Torquay may well have ditched their Academy. It may well be down to the fact that their league position does not support them running it. Geography may also be a factor. The majority of clubs are looking to either create or continue with their Academy status and rightly so. Crewe have players who are on the fringes of the first team right now from last years successful Under 18s so why the negative comments about our Academy not producing seem rather ridiculous to me.

Timmys looking back over his shoulder for the last 30years,yes it done very well,Now look forward as its been said the club can not afford its cost,the days of the Premiership wanting our players will disapear now as they want kids from Brazil,Chile,not Crewe! all Crewe are doing is supplying the Championship clubs,which will not cover the cost.Look at the 1st team now Lack of funds no signings!so dont be surprized that we are just kicking the tin down the road,to another season like the last two.

Timmy if you read most posts people aren't saying we need an academy,they are questioning what CAT it needs to be.

Just a couple of things to add to the initial post.

Rejects from academies - we tried to sign Leigh, Chuks and Ness and succeeded in signing Inman only two years ago. So it can't be said we aren't trying.

'Non-league' players - Duggy rejoined us from Barrow (I think), Jon Guthrie was signed from Wes*** League Division 1 side Pewsey Vale and, as has been pointed out, we have also trialled the lad from Leek Town this season.

It must be recognised that Prem League rejects come a good deal more expensive these days, and more clubs are tapping into the what seems to be called non-League, although it should be more accurately called semi-pro or lower leagues.

I think the idea is right, but the competition is greater.

I get annoyed when I hear all this nonsense about giving up on the academy, especially when you look at the players we have produced over the years. It has been a privilege to watch these players develop and realise there potential, they have also kept the club in business or at best we would now be non-league. Some wiseguy said the academy is 30 years out of date, well I think with the likes of Jones, Cooper, Saunders, Murdoch, Baille coming through I think the academy is as relevant now as it ever has. Even at this stage of there development try and put a price tag on these players and you'd be talking a 7 figure sum, how do you attract players like these unless you develop them yourself. Yes we need experienced pros on free transfers and we need to persuade these players to come here and it is difficult.

Vale have more money but Smurf despite his faults puts money into the club. Shrewsbury have backers, Bury have got a £2million loan at 10% interest which is an accident waiting to
