Jerusalem was seceded to the Arabs following various Middle Eastern conflicts. If I recall correctly Saladin took it from the Jews in around 1180 AD. Diasporas of the Jewish people, medieval shenanigans and much later British interventions have totally screwed up the whole kit'n'kaboodle.
Hebron, Bethlehem the West Bank, Gaza, the Golan Heights, Israeli captures of Jordanian, Egyptian and Syrian land are all issues that have added fuel to a burning fire.
