Northern Ireland

We have just returned from a week in Northern Ireland - we had never been before - and what a brilliant time we had.

We explored the Causeway Coast between Belfast and Londonderry and it has to rate among the best coastal scenery we have ever seen. The road was surprisingly quiet - apart from around the Giants Causeway.
We kept bumping into groups of tourists who were visiting sites used in the filming of Game of Thrones, which we have never watched.

The locals were really friendly and laid back and we received fantastic hospitality everywhere we went.

Near the borders there is a definite undercurrent of feeling bubbling under...the Bogside Estate in Londonderry for example...and if we botch up the Irish border arrangements during the Brexit negotiations then it is easy to see how things could kick off again.

We will certainly return again.

Another bloody fine legacy the old British Empire created. Imperialists - who would have them?

Am I reading this right? If border controls have to be re-introduced the Derry Bogside Catholics go on the warpath again?

It looks a very fragile situation in some parts BT. Plenty of IRA/Unionist flags and murals in these areas.

If there is a hard border then the IRA could easily see it as a chance to further their aims.

I hope I'm a million miles off though.

some on either side, could secretly like the (hard border) idea....brings that sleeping rivalry back to the boil - though this isn't the 1970's - start building tickers, and throwing cocktails nowadays....and those Terror police that roam the planet promoting their idea of peace - would have no option (without Hypocrisy) but to send in Wolves - so would need to step careful - don't rise to the bait - and just hope that any reaction wasn't invented.

So they're going to start blowing up innocent women and children again ? Jesus wept, and these people are now running Northern Ireland. I doubt they will anyway, time is on their side, all they need to do is wait until they have the numbers and Northern Ireland will be delivered to the Republic in the promised referendum, its just a matter of time and demographics, no need for bombs and Armalites any more.

The latest census (2011) showed that in Northern Ireland 48% were Protestants and 45% Catholic. This does not mean that they would vote that way in a referendum but it shows how tight a vote is likely to be.

The great pity is that we found that everyone we met was friendly and welcoming and they are just happy to get along with life. As usual, it is a small number of extremists (on both sides) who whip up the bother.

You say that these people are running Northern Ireland Sinkov. But Stormont has not sat since January 2017. And, to be honest, the place seems to be doing very nicely thank you without them.

If a hard border with Ireland is reinstated then it could be the catalyst for the bovver boys to re-emerge.

Like I say, I hope I am totally wrong, but if you look at some places in Belfast and Londonderry it makes you wonder...

The truth is Westminster would love to pass the parcel to Dublin, but they keep on singing the old Elvis tune, "Return to Sender!"

Good afternoon 59/60. At the 2001 census the figures were RC 40.2 %, Non RC Christian 45.6 %. Ten years later the RCs were almost there, 2011 census RC 40.8 %, Non RC Christian 41.6 %. It's something our government tries it's best to ignore, but it's coming down the line at a rate of knots, the referendum which will mean Ulster leaving the UK.

It always bemuses me, the derision and scorn poured on Trump and others by the Left, yet we've had IRA murderers like Adams and McGuiness running Ulster and no one on the Left seemed to bat an eyelid.
