The Summer of 75

No.......not the long hot summer of 76 but the year before.

I was 13 and shortly to be 14 in the October.

It was the first time my mum and dad had been able to afford to take us away for a weeks holiday at a hotel and we stayed at The Edgcumbe Hotel on the front in Newquay.

Gosh I thought I was in heaven.

Indoor and outdoor pools and a basement room specially for teenagers complete with table tennis table,TV and a juke box.

Me amongst a group of totally inept mid ***** lads hopelessly out of our depth with the good looking birds who were already used to blokes a year or three older than themselves!

There’s two songs from that juke box that still bring it all back so vividly to me.....I can still see the faces and feel the excitement and the hopelessness of that room.

The Hustle by Van McCoy and I can’t give you anything but my love by The Styalistics.

I wondered if any of you ever stayed at The Edgecumbe in the past?

Below is a link to how it is now,pretty much derelict and filmed by a group of kids who specialise in filming empty buildings.......so sad and spooky to see what was once a great hotel in disrepair.

For many years since,including last year we’ve used the Watergate Bay Hotel which I can highly recommend......fantastic beach and surf.

Any other memories of teenage holidays and music memory jerkers lads?

Been to Newquay a few times, never stayed there.

Sad when you see nice old hotels get run down and derelict, though the state of the Edgecumbe is far better than the Headlands Hotel in Port Gaverne (neighbour village of Port Isaac where I’m staying now). Nice old Victorian building with the most beautiful location and views, closed down around 2010 and is now a total wreck.

If 76 hadn't been such a record breaker 75 would have been the best summer of the 70's. It was a hot one but with thunderstorms. I was 20.

Not been to Newquay for the past few years but last time we went a lot of the old hotels were in that state

Nice to hear all your stories of when you were kids in the 70's and enjoying yourselves but remember that me and a few others on here were sweating our b***s off working during those hot summers!

I was working in engineering at the time, we had to wear overalls all the time. Bloody hot it was.

In the 70's i used to watch Wimbledon. I don't like Tennis but i liked Chris Evert. But when them men women like Virginia Wade, Betty Stove and Martina Navratilova started getting to the final i stopped watching it.

Summer 1970 was the year i left school and the best World Cup ever. The weather was decent. The year of Catweazle too.

1971 was a good summer, some good Thunderstorms. Back St Luv, Curved Air. Folly Foot.

1972 was so so summer. Schools Out, though it had been two years earlier.

1973 was another nice warm Summer. Can The Can, Suzi Quatro.

1974 was a poor summer, very wet.

1975 was the best summer yet, hot, humid and Thundery. Going To Barbados, Typically Tropical.

1976 was the record breaker. Turned 21, drank all day. I recall going to Leeds with the Albion and seeing Sutton Park on Fire.

1977 another so so summer. Queens Jubilee, drank all day so don't remember much.

1978 was OK. Notable for the appearance of the lovely Kate Bush.

1979 was ok too. Are Friends Electric?

What a fantastic song.

It was either 79 or 80.....80 I think where “Oops Upside Your Head” dominated the charts and my summer in Newquay.

Sat on the dance floor with the bird I targeted sat behind me with her fanny grinding against my a r s e!

I still didn’t get a s h a g :-((

I was 21 on on hols with mates in Newquay.

Not all good though. Top 3 singles of that year

I heard Going to Barbados on the radio this week. Made me smile. David Es*** Hold Me Close brings back happy memories of my dad singing along to it and getting the words hopelessly wrong.
Queen 10cc and Bowie all had perhaps their biggest hits.
