Big shock from this war coming in the shape of big food price rises......

Russia and Ukraine combined account for 25% of global wheat exports and Ukraine alone for 13% of corn exports, according to analysts at RBC Capital Markets.

I don't think we are fully aware of what all this means, coming so quickly on the back of a global pandemic and a fractured brexix deal.

Perfect storm on the way for humanity and we are not even close to ready. Oligarchs, no matter what nationality are getting concerned.

It's a ridiculous situation when you think about it.

We could generate visually all of the power we need from wind, wave and solar in this country and we could have nuclear as part of the mix, all are "clean", even nuclear compared to the old days.

But we never properly prepare, we always kick the can down the road.

The taxation on petrol and diesel has long been a scandal, the government could have the same monetary take from it as they were a couple of years ago even if they dropped their % take per litre.

You're talking about petrol at £7+ per gallon shortly, just think about that for a second.

The pic I posted on the earlier thread of £1.79 per litre on the M1 actually works out at £8.17 per gallon! So your predicted £7+ will soon be a time of nostalgia :)

When and if the political turmoil subsides, our paying north of 1.60/litre will be the new norm.
As the oil price per barrel drops, the taxation will increase to fill the government coffers.

What a pity that we don’t still have the railway lines that the Marples/Beeching axis ripped up. We need more light railways, such as the West Midlands Metro system, state owned, of course. On the subject of state ownership, now we can see the folly of privatising gas and electricity, and as for water, it is outrageous that private companies make a profit from such a basic essential. State ownership of of all utilities and energy, can’t see it happening, though.

Yes and immediately the price at the pumps goes up too, I appreciate we don't hold huge stocks of petrol & diesel but that's take the mick big time.

The rest of the world could just turn on the taps but they won't - looking to cash in. It'll take years for our infrastructure to move away from oil and gas, heat pumps are extortionately expensive to run for example and we don't get enough sun or wind plus it takes years to build a nuclear power plant. By which time fossil fuels will have dropped in price - cheap energy then folks!

We could have quite cheap gas in the fairly near future if we exploited the shale gas that we have; it would keep us going for about 30 years. The green folks would be up in arms, though, as it involves fracking. The country needs it, so just do it.
