As a Dutchman who also follows Dutch football, he was well known prior to Orta's interest and was scoring for PSV regularly. It's not like Orta saw something that nobody else in the Nederlands saw. It was just a matter of time before the big clubs came for him.
I suspect we tried to nickel & dime the deal, before the 49-ers came in with their "let's buy every American player" philosophy, and the oodles of dollars that accompanied it, by which time, as OW says, he was on the radar of those with even deeper pockets and we got Rutter instead!
We may have leaked to the press that we enquired about him. That may have been all.
He must be relieved he didn't join us.
Unfortunately, Lpool snapped out of their funk. They'll be playing for a champions league spot by the time they hit ER. wish we had caught them earlier.
