Mon 05 Dec 1983 BIRMINGHAM CITY L 1-3 - 7,361 (Hopkins ??, Harford 23, Hopkins 40, O'Neill 80)
By the time of the first replay we knew we were playing for a plum last 16 home tie with Liverpool. By the 2nd replay we knew we'd then face Howard Wilkinson's Sheffield Wednesday away in the Quarter finals.
We were in the same division as Birmingham so ended up playing them 6 times that season, taking 4 points off them in the league and ultimately being relegated together. They bounced straight back after securing the signature of Ken Armstrong, who we'd also had on loan towards the end of 1983/84 and wanted to sign permanently.
It wasn't the first time we'd gone to a 3rd replay though. In 1923/24 it took four matches for 1st tier Notts to decide an FA Cup tie with 2nd tier Crystal Palace, there were three goalless draws before Palace won the 4th game 2-1. The 3rd and 4th games took place at Villa Park with the locals no doubt favouring the underdogs Palace as they wore the exact same kit as Villa in those days.
