Dean Jones - only 59 FFS. Semi-legendary under Allan Border’s captaincy, most memorably after holding out for 210 against India in the mid-80s, ending up dehydrated and on an intravenous drip feed, not even Foster’s. Known to fling the bat, he influenced limited overs cricket with his “Ach, I’ll cream the ****er and see fit happens” approach. I like to think he was impressed by my similar approach in the odd few times (“we’ve only sivvin players, 57 min, put that can of McEwan’s and the Banffie doon, and fill in a 8. Or 11 if we can find three ither suckers nae nursing hangovers”) I graced Keith Cricket Club’s second XI - or onything from VII upwards - iin the Highland Reserve League, batting in the extreme lower order and snoozing in the field at back extra cover.
