Expanding his interests in a move not directly linked to the takeoever is how I read it, Geordie.
It's the equivalent of going to a party with the intention of meeting up with a particular girl but, while you're there, you meet another lass who you don't fancy as much but who is available...unlike the girl you went to meet.
Or something like that. :D
