    Big Impact Player Injuries

No getting away from the fact that injuries are going to hurt us again this season, assuming JJ could potentially be out for a while.

The loss of Palmer really hurt us last season and got me thinking about other key Notts players that suffered long term injuries that impacted results on the pitch, I’m thinking maybe Gary Liddle more recently, anyone else?

O'Riordan out for all but the 1st game of the top flight Warnock season. We needed 5 more points to stay up, he might have made the difference.

Aidy Thorpe in the run in when we were going for promotion 87/88, we took 2 points from the 15 after he got injured.

Yes, remember both of those hurting us. How costly was that Don O injury?!

We've probably over-egged his potential contribution to that season over the years since, he turned 34 that season with very little top flight experience to speak of, but he played a particular role and brought something to the table that nobody else did and there were certain games where his experience might have earned us a point rather than coming out with nothing. Thinking about it, Alan Paris was arguably the bigger loss that season, he played his last game with us still above the trapdoor in January.

Iain McCulloch probably wouldn't have prevented us going down from the top flight under Lloyd, but I'm under the impression he would have been one of those players that stuck around (along with Pedro, Benji, Harkouk, Hunt and Goodwin) and we would not have gone straight down to tier 3 with him in the side.

Mick Walker, who had brought Dean Yates through the youth setup, only ever got to start him in 6 league games because of a long term injury.

Paul Barnes is another home grown player that we might have spoken of in the same glowing terms as Tommy J, Draper, Yates and Michael J had he not had his very significant injury issues.

Warnock himself stated that the Don O'Riordan injury was a key factor in Notts being relegated.
He might also have mentioned the terrible refereeing decisions v Man Utd and Liverpool home games too !.
Injuries and poor officials seem to be recurring themes in Notts County's fortunes !

Flair players will always get hammered at this level, by the time a ref steps in with any punitive action, it's damage done. What can be a yellow card for the offending team, can be a key player out for a season and another teams ambitions, badly affected. It could have been a shrewd, cynical move by Gillingham, recognising us as fellow contenders so taking out a key player and helping them out in the match and in the long run?

I didn't expect to be so injury hit this early, if we lose Danny boy, that could be our season done.

It was often said at the time that Barnwell's 87/88 side were better suited to a higher level where you could play football, whereas everybody in tier 3 soon realised they could just kick lumps out of us, our hardest player was McP who was up front and not in the mix of things. There were complaints about Warnock's style pretty much all the way up to that night we beat Bristol Rovers, but Warnock got the club promoted and Barnwell didn't.
Obviously the game has changed since then, though perhaps today is a reminder that maybe not so much, this low down. The big concern now would be that Gillingham, very early in the season, have shown everybody else in this league how to deal with us.

Disagree, I don't think Gillingham 'dealt' with us at all, and given normal circumstances we win that game 7/10 times. They took the points because we wasted 3 gilt-edged chances and every critical decision from the officials went in their favour. I'm more concerned about the points we dropped today than against Gillingham.

What the heck is wrong with Jatta?

Is it still concussion? How can you have it for a fortnight? If it's something else now, fair enough but only Notts could have someone out with concussion for a fortnight FFS.

Concussion doesn’t just disappear.. it’s not like a headache. There are other symptoms that can impact a person and on occasion can cause longer terms problems. Players in other sports have retired on the back of concussion.
