    Dundee utd and money

When you look at what money they bring in its astonishing that we have consistantly over the last few years managed to be above them in the league. They got 2.2 million for goodwillie no idea why as hes now been freed and thought at the time blackburn were off their head and now they reportly have received 3 million for an 18yr old who has played about 25 games wish we could bring someone through like this as most we have received over the past 5 yrs as far as i know is 300k tops. When you see this amount of income coming into other clubs you feel a bit envious but it shows they have a good scouting system as robertson also been talked about in the 1.5 million bracket and they got him from queens park.

United seem to be very good at spotting young talent of the highest calibre and then they work at getting them to sign on decent length deals, often three years.
We do not seem to unearth talent at quite the same level and we consistently offer two year deals max. The exceptions to that are Ojamaa and Anier who both signed two and half year deals and - surprise, surprise - when somebody wanted them they had enough time left on their contract to mean that the purchaser has to pay full whack rather than wait until Xmas and get them cheap (e.g. Murphy) or summer and get them free.
You'd think we would have learned by now.

Gauld will be leaving for an "undisclosed sum".

Dundee United have a good scouting system but just as importantly its backed by hard cash. Young lads will sign for the highest wages make no mistake about that. They pick up good prospects that other clubs also look at but pay them more than their competitors. There's no magic formula.

Not disputing your wage scenario as had no idea they offered more money to young kids coming through do you know that as a fact or are you just presuming they do that as just thought they had a good scouting system.

Also they are not shy in filling the first team with these young boys which makes them shine I mean we are on the look out for a centre half and a forward might as well use the young lads we have and give them the chance to play week in week out.

We'll see if there is in the next season or two - Levein basically abolished their entire system and stuck the unheralded 24(ish) year old Ian Cathro in charge of it with lots of progressive/continental ideas. Gauld (along with Armstrong, Souter etc) are the first graduates. If they go from being promising Scottish kids to genuine stars AND another batch of kids on the same path replace them, it would seem more than the coincidental good batch that every club gets occasionally.

Utd have a far better youth system than we do. They also don't bite the hand off someone as soon as they offer a bit of cash. As another post says they got in the region of 2 million for goodwillie whose never kicked a ball down south, we got a couple hundred grand for murphy from sheffield utd.

The choice was that or lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Hibs and Dundee Utd can offer good terms financially compared to us and can probably play a wee bit more hard ball in contract negotiations with agents. We on the other hand will be border line pleading with players to accept our terms and consequently probably agree with agents that walk away conditions are probably built into ever contract we draw up. Therefore we can never hold out for the big sums Hibs and Dundee Utd can get.

At times it is very frustrating how weak the team play the contract game, and i don't know why motherwell would be pleading for anyone to sign up? the manager is the national coach - and showing why, by coaching players into their best results. Surely, if you were a young player (esp. scottish) and were looking to up your game, then working with the national coach daily would be a massive bonus over short term financial gain.
