Missed that completely. Glad you enjoyed it anyway. Here is another one I am sure you will like, again loaded with social and some political history. I particularly enjoyed it because I have spent a lot of time in Brazil over the years.

Thanks for the suggestion, Woody; the book is available in the Vancouver Public Library and I may pick it up next time I am in the downtown core. I enjoyed your initial suggestion, "Those Feet," and agree that it is one of the best books around for those wishing to understand English football.
On the plus side it was very informative with a great variety of sources from across the heights and breadth of England. One does not have to grow up with football boots on to be able to understand the text, yet the book never "talks down to the reader" and contains such a rich variety of information that anyone on this board good enjoy and appreciate it (IMHO).
I also found that the book says as much about the English psyche as the sport itself. Nowhere is the "doom and gloom" approach to footy better illustrated than in the chapter, "Its Cold and We're Rubbish!" To add though an analysis of British comedy and especially the basis for the humour of Monty Python is a lovely adjunct to the abov

Pretty much, the only difference being that I did not find the chapter about the boots particularly dry. I used to wear those old fashioned "Dubbined" boots when I was a kid.:-S
