My work requires reading French. Don't think I'll ever be perfectly fluent speaking it but I get by. I'm self-conscious about making mistakes.

I studied Arabic for years way back when but it has atrophied from lack of use.

French here too, my reading is better than my speaking, but in either case I can make myself understood. Unfortunately, though my home city of Montreal has a large French speaking population, it is the French of 17th century France and as such differs somewhat from the French of contemporary France that I learned in school.

Having marked many students' high school essays over the years I am quite conversant in gibberish!

I do French and Italian, a little rusty now but it comes back to me pretty quickly. Spent two years working in Italy when I was a kid and also worked there a couple of times. Did French at school and also worked there many time during the seventies and eighties. Can read both pretty well along with Portuguese [again time spent working in Brazil.

Like Italian the best, very beautiful language but also very ordered and logical.

    re: foreign languages

Generally as a nation we British are poor at speaking other languages. French was optional when I was at school and as I was struggling with English at the time, I chose not to partake. A great regret, as I am now a frequent visitor to the Country along with Spain.

I have learned enough French to ask for directions and order a beer, through frequent visits in the lorry. The problem is that you make an attempt to speak the language , which is appreciated, but they talk back that fast that I can not understand them.
