    Cricket????

When I was younger I used to like the game and even played for a while in a proper Works League.
Had a lot of success as a bowler but was probably the worst batsman that has ever played the game. A cricket bat used to feel like holding a log to me. Always batted No.11 and don't remember getting a single run.
Anyway cricket, I used to follow Hampshire in the days of Shackleton, and remember McKenzie and a pre-Marshall black opening bat that was very good.
Liked England with the Bedsers and the Comptons and Hutton etc. It all went wrong for me when one day cricket started which I hated and still do. Just lost all interest and stopped watching many many years ago. Now don't know or care who wins what.
But still think the English have a 'be a good loser' mentality in most sport although the Brownlees and our cyclists are slowly changing my mind.

Tom Graveney (until he defected to Worcestershire), David Allen, John Mortimore, George Emmett, Bomber Wells, Jack Crapp (no jokes required) and George Cook were my heroes up in the Cotswolds. Must not forget the footballer cricketers like Arthur Milton, Barrie Meyer, Ron Nicholls etc. Procter and Zaheer came later. Sounds like the opener you cant think of is Gordon Greenidge Adder ?

Re. the black Hampshire opener before Marshall - not Greenidge as he was later, in fact I can't think who it would have been.

    re: Cricket????

I first got interested in cricket as a nipper when the WI toured with Griffiths and Hall. It was the first time I had seen a test series on tv and was hooked. Pictures were in the paper of Brian Close covered in bruises who had stood up to the short pitched bowling refusing to wear protective clothing. Gary Sobers was totally brilliant at every aspect of the game. Dexter, Barrington, Cowdrey, Close, Trueman, Shackleton - all legends. And little Fred "Where's me toes?" Titmus who turned me into a lifelong Middle*** supporter.

Played a bit of cricket at school but gave it up for rowing when I was 14 and didn't start playing again until I was 36 which was a shock. Anyone who has played the game knows cricket is a very tough game physically and mentally. It can look easy but it aint. I love it.
