For his age, Calum Chambers is one of the best central defenders I have seen, and in the last week he has been up against Benfica, Valencia and Man City, so he's certainly been tested.

We need to offer JC a contract first and then get him to sign it.
But yes, I reckon he could play in that role easily (he filled in at RB if I recall), RK doesn't though and that's the salient point. Has he played all that much in the pre season games?
