    Wooney

So what's the betting Fleet Streets finest will be waxing lyrical about Wooney's wonder goal?

It was a decent enough penalty but lets not go over the top.

It's when you look at the chances he wasted, that you realise, if you hadn't already, just how far he is behind the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

For all the hype around his 43 goal tally for England, around 25% have been scored in friendly games. For qualifiers, most have been against minnows, and he's only got one World Cup finals goal to his. Hardly inspiring.

I'm kind of torn on this one. He was abject last night and most of our attacks ended when he got involved either with a mis-control, a poor pass or an abject attempt on goal. But when no one else managed to score, he somehow did.

However, I think his scoring record does stack up. He's got more competitive goals than anyone else and when you look at who he got them against, there's not too many minnows in there. Average opponents yes, but not the whipping boys.

He may have only 1 World Cup Finals Goal, but he's got 5 European Championships and he missed one tournament thanks to the brolly wally. - view external link

No need to add anything to this.

Depressing as it is, that really does sum it up.

IMO, the FA has to implement a root and branch change to the development and continued progression of young English talent in this country - perhaps those at Lancaster Gate could do worse than having a flick through the blueprints followed by Germany and Spain in recent years.
