“There will be three days of national commemoration to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day, the Prime Minister has confirmed.

The celebrations, likely to mark the last significant anniversary for which any great number of Second World War veterans will be alive, will include a ceremony at the Cenotaph in London on May 8, a national service at Westminster Abbey and a parade.

David Cameron described VE Day as "one of the most pivotal moments in our nation's proud history". He said that William Hague, leader of the Commons, had been appointed to oversee plans for the anniversary.
The announcement follows growing concern that the anniversary marking the end of World War II would be overlooked as it falls the day after the general election.

But the celebrations will start 24 hours after the May 7 poll, when some of the results are unlikely to have been confirmed.

Party leaders, members of the Royal Family, war veterans and related organisations will gather on May 8 at the Cenotaph
