    Major Frank Buckley

    Hi fellas,

I suspect most of you probably know a fair bit about the Major, but just thought some of you might be interested in this article on his life & career.

If there's anyone who didn't know, Buckley managed Wolves from 1927 until 1944. He arrived when the club was in serious financial trouble but through his excellent scouting system he was able to recruit talented youngsters and sell them on for considerable profit.

Buckley's only trophy at Wolves was the 1942 Football League War Cup, but he did reach the FA Cup final in 1939, finishing runner-up the same season and the season before that. The following year all football was put on hold by the war. After the Major left Wolves, Stan Cullis guided the team to the well-known success of the 1950's, but it is worth noting that when Wolves lifted the FA Cup in 1949, seven of the starting XI were Buckley's signings.

Anyway, for those of you interested, the article is here:

A great article and an excellent read. He played a big part at Wolves and enabled others to benefit after he had left the club. You learn something new every day, ie the changing of Blackpool's colours from red to 'orange/tangerine' - view external link

An excellent article and thanks for bringing it to our attention. Major Buckley's story is indeed fascinating and, for those who want more, I recommend reading Patrick A Quirke's book 'The Major, the life and times of Frank Buckley', for even more detail on the great man.
