Syracuse and Mount Etna on the East of the island are your best bet, Palermo is run-down and the Mafia's home town.

What? I thought you was coming to see me

Like Roly I have been to and would recommend the Sorrento/Amalfi area but never ventured as far south as Sicily. Mind you it was few years back as Gazza had just finished crying and while I was there Gooch was hitting 333 at Lords.

I can recommend the south to southeast corner - Ragusa, Noto, Scicli etc. Food and wine excellent and relatively cheap. Great beaches. Villa rental quite pricy though.

Taormina (and Etna) is supposed to be spectacular, but we didn't get there.

We flew to Catania from Gatwick with BA (expensive), but you can now fly to Comiso with Ryanair from Stansted.

If you want to get a feel for what that area is like, take a look at any of the episodes of Inspector Montalbano on iPlayer or iTunes. His 'home' is in Punta Secca and the police station is in Scicli.

Can highly recommend Taormina. Beautiful setting and quality food / drink. Quite pricey for this area though.
