I think Bowery was unlucky in having Evans as his manager, a manager strong on lots of running and aggression but weak on tactics and style. Bowery isn't a real "get stuck in" type of player so it was surprising that Evans signed him.

With a run of games Bowery will improve providing he is played away from being a central target man. Bowery's style is more like Agard than Revell so when he played it was a waste of time lumping the ball to him in the air. He needs the ball laying off to him so his bursts of pace can flatfoot a defence.

Hopefully Bowery's loan deal will develop him and we get a much improved player coming back to the squad.

I agree with that, Jolly. Evans' approach is you're either good enough or you're not. For someone like Bowery, who isn't, but might be in time, that's a difficult thing to deal with. (Similarly, JCH was for the chop and I think we're probably glad he saved himself in time).

I don't think Evans had a clear idea about how he wanted Bowery to play and who with. Raynor talked about him having been coached at Villa into playing with his back to goal, but us wanting him to get it on the turn and run. And then we played him as a target man, when we played him at all, or as stick him on and hope something happens sub (in which role, he did ok).

I think he wasn't helped by the fact that Derbyshire was so out of form at the start of last year - it put the pressure onto the other strikers and, actually, Bowery wanted to make the same runs as Derbyshire.

Personally, I think that if we gave him an extended run with JCH or had given him one with Revell, or now with Best, he might be effect

Depends on what we're looking for if its an out and out striker no.

    He's been a real disappointment.
I thought he would be our breakthrough player this season but he seems to have gone backwards.
People keep saying what he isn't and what he can't do but he's 6'4" for crying out loud and has pace to burn so he should be frightening defences to death wherever he's played.
Blame the previous manager if you like but, for me, the biggest problem is Bowery's attitude.
If he can get his head straight he would be quite a player at Championship level.
If he can't he might end up going the way of Malcolm Marshall.

How did Evans describe him? So nice he could be my son in law.....

What he really meant was.... You're lazy you're built like a brick *bleep*house but don't use this to your advantage and looking at him in play he simply doesn't...,

Six feet odd and his aerial ability is pants.... So he's out on loan with a view to improving himself all round but for me until he gets a nasty streak and puts himself about more and starts to apply himself it's a no from me..,,

oops predictive text. Should have said Marcus Marshall.
Then again Bowery might be a better at cricket than he is at football!

Mellow - I wasn't laying Bowery's lack of success all at Evans' door. He's 100% not helped himself with his performances.

Having said that, he scored the most goals of anyone from off the bench last year, so he can make a difference and he can take chances. I just think that he's suffered from not having a set role in the side/squad (sometimes he's been asked to lead the line, sometimes to get beyond the opposition, sometimes to play wide left). His chance conversion rate is probably better than Derbyshire's, as it happens, but it seems that because he doesn't chase around as enthusiastically (although Derbyshire's chasing doesn't achieve too much), he's almost instantly discounted.

I've long thought that pound for pound Bowery is our worst ever signing. £350k for someone who isn't worth tuppence.

If he can't make an impact playing off Hanson in Division 3 he should pack the game in. Gee Evans' assessment of a player is even worse than his brother's and he too should no longer be at the club. We'd be crazy to take him back and Parkinson would be equally mad to want him.

I suspect he won't so look out for a freebie to Division 4.

    Five second pause.

Sorry, who are we talking about?
